Toddler Killed in Random Parking Lot Attack

A devastating act of violence occurred on June 3, 2024, in North Olmsted, Ohio when a typical shopping trip turned fatal for the Wood family. A random attack in a Giant Eagle supermarket’s parking lot claimed the life of three-year-old Julian Wood and left his mother, Margot Wood, 38, injured.

Following the incident, Bionca Ellis, 32, has been charged with aggravated murder. North Olmsted Police Detective Sgt. Matt Beck stated that the suspect, dressed in black and wielding a kitchen knife she had recently purchased, approached the Woods as they returned to their car after shopping. Ellis allegedly pursued the family and attacked them at their vehicle. Julian, still in a shopping cart, sustained fatal injuries to his back and cheek while his mother was stabbed in the shoulder when she tried to get him out of the cart.

Nicole Dailey Jones, the Mayor of North Olmsted, expressed the community’s grief over the loss of the young child in such a violent manner. She called it a “profound tragedy affecting our entire community.” The sentiment was echoed by a Giant Eagle spokesperson, who offered their condolences and the company’s commitment to support the affected families and the wider community.

According to Sgt. Beck, police were summoned to the scene by multiple 911 calls from bystanders who witnessed the horrifying attack which took less than five seconds. The responding officers arrived promptly, administering first aid to the victims and arresting Ellis without further incident. The suspect was still in possession of the knife used in the attack when taken into custody. Beck added that the investigation into the motive of the attack is ongoing; however, all evidence thus far points to a random act of violence.

Julian was rushed to St. John Medical Center in Westlake, Ohio, where he was confirmed dead. His mother received treatment for her injuries and is expected to recover fully. The police have confirmed that there was no previous interaction between Ellis and the victims, and Ellis’s criminal history includes only theft offenses and a probation violation, with no prior recorded violent incidents.

On June 10 bail for Ellis was set at $5 million by Judge Nancy Margaret Russo of Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court.

This incident comes less than a year after another violent event at the same Giant Eagle store, raising ongoing concerns about public safety in the area. The previous incident involved a murder-suicide with a 63-year-old employee and her ex-husband, whom she had divorced years earlier, further impacting the community.

A representative for Giant Eagle assured that the company is offering counseling services to its employees and is prepared to assist the North Olmsted community in any way possible. Despite the recent tragedies, the store continues to operate and serve as a crucial resource for the local residents.

Mayor Dailey Jones conveyed the community’s deep sorrow and strong support during a press conference, saying, “As a mother, I cannot even begin to fathom the sense of loss that this family is going through. The city and I all share in your loss.”

The tragic ordeal faced by the Wood family has prompted a surge of support from friends, neighbors, and strangers. A GoFundMe page set up to cover the medical and funeral expenses has raised over $100,000, exemplifying the community’s unity in the face of such a loss.
