Former NFL Player Dies at Age 52

Unexpected news shook the American football world when Larry Allen, a significant figure in Dallas Cowboys’ history and a respected icon of the sport, died at the age of 52. The Dallas Cowboys announced on June 3, 2024, that Allen was vacationing with his family in Mexico when he passed on June 2.

Allen served 12 out of his 14 NFL seasons with the Cowboys, who expressed their profound admiration for his contributions stating, “Larry, recognized for his extraordinary athleticism and exceptional strength, ranked among the most respected and accomplished offensive linemen in NFL history. His career demonstrated versatility, and reliability, and was a source of inspiration for numerous players. He exemplified the qualities of an excellent teammate and fierce competitor.” Allen garnered ten Pro Bowl selections during his tenure with the Cowboys and an additional one with the San Francisco 49ers.

Allen was born in Compton, California, and overcame a difficult childhood that included attending several high schools and battling serious health problems. His journey to the NFL was marked by talent and determination. He began his college football career at Butte College before transferring to Sonoma State University. Allen, chosen by the Cowboys in the second round of the 1994 draft, quickly became a force to be reckoned with on the field.

Allen’s legacy is highlighted by his significant contribution to the Cowboys’ Super Bowl XXX win and his impressive 700-pound bench press, which solidified his legendary status in the league. Noted for his physical prowess and versatility, Allen played every position on the offensive line except one during his career, earning him places on the NFL All-Decade Teams for the 1990s and 2000s.

“I’m at a loss for words right now. Larry was a great guy, an outstanding player, and a wonderful person. “He had a big heart and embraced life to the fullest. Though he spoke little, he was a formidable force on the football field and will be deeply missed,” shared former Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith on social media.

“Just received the heartbreaking news of the passing of our beloved teammate Larry Allen,” posted Troy Aikman, Allen’s former quarterback, on X. “He was a Hall of Fame offensive lineman who excelled in any position. Off the field, he was a gentle giant who cherished his family. Rest in peace, LA.”

Aside from his football achievements, Allen’s devotion and love for his family were widely known. He is survived by his wife, Janelle, and their three children, Jayla, Loriana, and Larry III. Allen often referred to his wife as his heart and soul.

The Jones family and the Cowboys extended their deepest sympathies to the Allen family, acknowledging his significant personal and professional influence.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame, where Allen was a first-ballot inductee in 2013, lauded his unique combination of size, strength, speed, and agility, noting, “His abilities as an offensive lineman often seemed beyond belief and understanding.”

The Cowboys announced that details regarding a memorial service would be forthcoming, providing an opportunity for fans, friends, and former teammates to honor a man whose career and personal qualities left a lasting impression on the sport.

The life of Larry Allen serves as a testament to resilience, excellence, and dedication, both on the football field and in his personal life.
