“The NFL Today,” CBS’s renowned NFL studio show, is experiencing a major transformation. The long-established sports broadcast is seeing a substantial overhaul, leading to the departure of veteran hosts Boomer Esiason and Phil Simms. This is part of a broader modification strategy within the program, designed to rejuvenate its lineup and presentation.

Boomer Esiason, a former quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets, and Arizona Cardinals, recently announced his decision to withdraw from “The NFL Today,” a platform he has been part of for over 20 years. Despite the shift seeming more like a corporate move than a personal one, Esiason conveyed his appreciation for the CBS team.

Esiason, 63, started his career at CBS in 2002 as a studio analyst for “The NFL Today” after his successful run as an NFL quarterback, especially with the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets.

He brought his insightful observations and engaging personality to the show, rapidly becoming a viewer favorite for his direct analysis and profound grasp of football strategies. Over time, he also contributed to CBS Radio Sports, offering commentary and hosting, showcasing his adaptability and appeal across various media platforms. His lengthy stint at CBS was characterized by his dynamic presence and the capability to connect with the football fanbase.

Esiason plans to continue his media career with WFAN, co-hosting its top-rated morning show. “I had been there for 22 years. It’s been an amazing run,” Esiason reflected, pondering his tenure with “The NFL Today” program and expressing surprise at its length.

Phil Simms, another prominent figure on the show and a two-time Super Bowl champion with the New York Giants, echoed similar feelings about his exit.

Simms, who spent 26 years with CBS, has witnessed the evolution of sports broadcasting first-hand. Even though he’s stepping away from “The NFL Today,” he’s not prepared to completely retire from sports media. “Great 26-year run with CBS SPORTS. Even though that part of my career is over, I look forward to what is next,” Simms stated on his social media, hinting at future ventures.

Simms began at CBS in 1998 as a color commentator and quickly established himself as a knowledgeable and perceptive analyst. His expertise was particularly appreciated in his role alongside Jim Nantz in the network’s premier broadcast team, where he covered numerous high-profile NFL games, including Super Bowl broadcasts.

His clear analysis and deep comprehension of the game enabled him to connect with his audience. Despite criticism for his style over the years, Simms’s contributions to sports broadcasting have been widely respected. His transition from a successful NFL quarterback to a notable sports broadcaster can be credited to his profound love for football and his ability to communicate that passion to viewers.

In a recent interview with Front Office Sports, Simms expressed his interest in another TV role, despite hesitations about its feasibility due to his age and industry dynamics. The former quarterback, aged 68, stated frankly, “Of course, I would love that. But that’s not going to happen. You know that — and I know that,” reflecting on his long period of 26 years at CBS Sports.

Sean McManus, the CBS Sports chairman who initially hired Esiason, is also departing this year, indicating a significant change in the network’s sports broadcasting approach.

In the wake of the departing veterans, CBS plans to introduce new personalities to its audience, including former NFL players Matt Ryan and J.J. Watt. Their fresh perspectives and enthusiasm are anticipated to breathe new life into the revamped “The NFL Today.”

James Brown, a long-standing member of the show, has secured a new two-year contract with CBS, offering a comforting sense of continuity amidst the changes. His presence is expected to play a key role in bridging the show’s past and future, ensuring a seamless transition for the viewers.

As “The NFL Today” proceeds with its new lineup, it remains to be seen how this mix of experience and fresh talent will resonate with viewers accustomed to the familiar faces of Esiason and Simms. Undoubtedly, their legacy is highlighted by decades of expert analysis, unforgettable commentary, and a deep passion for the game of football.
