The Suffolk County District Attorney’s office reported on Tuesday, April 30, that no criminal charges will be pursued in the case concerning the bodies of four newborns found in a freezer in a South Boston, Massachusetts apartment back in November 2022.
The investigation hit a dead-end due to unresolved queries related to the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the infants. The authorities described the case as “one of the most complex, unusual and perplexing” they have ever dealt with.
The newborns, two boys and two girls with their umbilical cords still attached, were discovered in shoe boxes in the freezer, wrapped in tin foil. Postmortem examinations could not verify if the babies were born alive, and no signs of trauma or injuries were reported.
The investigators identified the infants’ mother as 69-year-old Alexis Aldamir, who is currently residing in a healthcare facility. DNA testing confirmed Aldamir as the mother of all four babies, and further testing connected them to a deceased man, who fathered a child that Aldamir gave up for adoption in 1982. However, the authorities could not locate any other birth records for Aldamir or determine whether the infants were ever alive.
The babies were found when family members were cleaning Aldamir’s apartment in November 2022. DNA analysis certified that all four were full siblings, aged between 37 and 40 weeks at birth, with no signs of internal or external injuries found in the autopsies.
District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced the conclusion of the investigation, stating that the case could not move forward due to insufficient evidence. Aldamir, reportedly disoriented during interviews and showing significant cognitive issues, was deemed unfit to stand trial. Despite intensive inquiries, the investigators could not extract any relevant data from her due to her limited communication abilities.
Hayden noted that many questions about the infants’ birth and death circumstances will remain unanswered. The authorities were unable to establish where or when the babies were born, how long they were frozen, if they were alive upon birth, or the specifics of their deaths. Moreover, how Aldamir concealed her pregnancies over the years remains unknown.
While the unavailability of concrete evidence blocks any criminal charges, the investigation into the deaths of the infants led to an unrelated murder case that is currently on trial. The district attorney’s office did not disclose further details about this connection, emphasizing their ethical stand to not pursue a case with zero chances of reaching a trial.
