TV Pioneer Dead at 95

Terry Carter, a trailblazer in television history and beloved star of iconic series such as Battlestar Galactica and McCloud, passed away at 95 on Tuesday morning, April 22, 2024, at his home in New York City. His passing marks the end of a diverse and impactful career spanning several decades in the entertainment industry.

Born John Everett DeCoste on December 16, 1928, in Brooklyn, New York City, Carter was a pioneering figure in television. He demonstrated remarkable determination as one of the first Black actors to become a regular on a major TV show, playing Private Sugarman on The Phil Silvers Show from 1955 to 1959. His role on this show set the stage for a long and fruitful career and shattered color barriers in the entertainment industry, inspiring generations to come.

In the 1970s, Carter gained further fame as Sergeant Joe Broadhurst on the television series McCloud, where he starred alongside Dennis Weaver. The show was well-received and ran for seven seasons, from 1970 to 1977. His portrayal of Colonel Tigh in the 1978 Battlestar Galactica series brought him into the sci-fi spotlight, adding to his versatile acting portfolio.

Apart from his on-screen roles, Carter was also known for his work behind the camera. He was a respected documentary filmmaker, producing works such as an Emmy-nominated documentary on jazz legend Duke Ellington. His production company, Meta-4 Productions, Inc., focused on creating films that promoted cultural and historical awareness.

Carter’s contributions to television were not just limited to acting and filmmaking. In 1965, he made history again by becoming the first Black news anchor in New England, working for Boston’s WBZ-TV. This role further highlighted his versatility and commitment to breaking new ground in the entertainment and broadcasting industries.

Throughout his life, Carter was recognized for his impact on the arts, including his work on the boards of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. His legacy in the entertainment industry is not only marked by his groundbreaking roles but also by his relentless efforts to promote diversity and understanding through his creative work, a contribution that the industry continues to appreciate.

Terry Carter is survived by his wife, Etaferhu Zenebe-DeCoste, his children, Miguel and Melinda, and a granddaughter. His family has announced that a private memorial will be held in his honor​.
