A somber investigation unfolded in St. Petersburg, Florida following a fatal shooting involving a stolen gun and two young brothers on April 26, 2024.

Amir Williams, an 11-year-old boy, was accidentally shot and killed by his 14-year-old brother, authorities reported.

St. Petersburg police were called to the scene shortly after 12 p.m. upon reports of a child being shot inside a home. Upon arrival, they found Amir suffering from a gunshot wound, which proved fatal.

At the time, Amir was at home with his siblings, a 13-year-old sister and the 14-year-old brother, during a day off from school. The children’s mother was not present during the incident. When she heard about the shooting and was rushing home, she had a traffic accident on the highway, damaged her car, and suffered minor injuries.

The older brother told police that he had found the firearm in an alley near their residence. According to police, the gun was reported stolen from a vehicle burglary just two days prior, on April 24. The 14-year-old said he was unaware of the gun’s deadly potential and expressed that the shooting was accidental.

“This case has deeply affected the community,” a St. Petersburg police spokesperson stated. “Our focus is on investigating this heartbreaking incident and providing support to those affected.”

Further details revealed that the gun was one of many stolen firearms in the area, an ongoing issue for local authorities. In 2023 alone, 251 guns were reported stolen in St. Petersburg, with many taken from unsecured vehicles.

Following the incident, the police announced that they are not planning immediate charges against the 14-year-old but will consult with the State Attorney’s Office to determine appropriate next steps. The primary concern for the police is how the teenager came into possession of the firearm and whether this constitutes culpable negligence or warrants manslaughter charges.

The community response has been one of mourning and a renewed call for preventive measures against gun violence.

Local residents and family friends gathered to remember Amir, described by many as a joyful child and an enthusiastic member of the St. Pete Lil’ Devils football team.

“We must work harder to ensure our children understand the dangers of firearms,” said one community leader during a vigil held for Amir. “Education and awareness are key in preventing such tragedies.”

Amir’s school, Azalea Middle School, has made counselors available to students and staff affected by the incident. The local community has also rallied to support the Williams family during this difficult time, emphasizing the need for stronger youth outreach and education programs related to gun safety.

As the investigation continues, St. Petersburg police and the State Attorney’s Office are closely examining the details of the case, including how the firearm ended up in the alley and the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
