Promising Young Football Player Dead at 23

The university community of Texas A&M-Commerce and the family of football player Keith Miller III are grappling with his unexpected death.

Miller, aged 23, was discovered dead in his apartment near the Commerce, Texas campus on the evening of April 11, 2024. The cause of his death is currently under investigation, with no details released by authorities at this time.

Miller, born and raised in The Colony, Texas, was known not only for his athletic abilities but also his dynamic personality and leadership skills. He played a pivotal role on the A&M-Commerce Lions team, serving as captain during the 2023 season, and was recognized for his influence both on the field and in his personal life.

His football career started at The Colony High School, where he stood out as a leading player. This led to him first playing for the Colorado Buffaloes before transferring back to his home state of Texas to play for A&M-Commerce. In his two seasons with the Lions, he made notable contributions as a wide receiver.

The university’s head coach, Clint Dolezel, shared his grief over Miller’s passing, describing him as a cherished father, son, teammate, and student. “Keith was the heart of our team and more so a caring individual off the field,” Dolezel said.

Jim Curry, the Athletic Director, also expressed his sadness, acknowledging the struggle to articulate the sudden void left by Miller’s passing.

In light of Miller’s death, Texas A&M-Commerce has increased its counseling services to assist students dealing with the loss. The entire Lion community, comprising students, faculty, and alumni, have been urged to unite during this difficult time to support each other and remember Miller’s legacy.

Brenden Rice, son of NFL Hall of Fame receiver Jerry Rice and a former Colorado teammate of Miller, who currently plays at USC, shared his sorrow on social media. “Keith was not just a teammate but a brother to me,” Rice said, pledging to look out for Miller’s son, underscoring the deep personal connections created through their time together on and off the field.
