Amitral “AJ” Simon, a distinguished defensive lineman and potential NFL Draft pick from the University of Albany, New York, died suddenly at the age of 25. The university confirmed his death on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, just a week before the anticipated NFL Draft.
Simon, a native of Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, was recognized for his remarkable potential both on and off the field. His recent pre-draft visit to New England hinted at his impending professional football career.
Simon was a former student of Bloomsburg University and was a celebrated athlete during his time with the Albany Great Danes. In his final season, he received several prestigious awards. He was acknowledged as a first-team All-CAA defensive player, a Phil Steele All-CAA first-team pick, and an FCS Football Central First-Team All-American.
In addition to his athletic abilities, Simon was highly praised for his academic accomplishments. He was included in the 2023 Fall CAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll, indicating a GPA between 3.0 and 3.7.
The UAlbany football team announced Simon’s death through its official account, describing him as a “tremendous young man and even better teammate.” The statement underscored his vital contribution to the program over the past two years.
Head football coach Greg Gattuso shared his grief, remembering the joyous two years he had spent coaching and becoming friends with Simon. In his tribute, Gattuso emphasized his personal bond with Simon, stating, “My prayers are dedicated to the Simon family. I love you AJ and will always have a special place in my heart for #8.”
UAlbany’s director of digital content and communications, Taylor O’Connor, recounted a personal anecdote demonstrating Simon’s kindness and humility. O’Connor remembered interacting with Simon as he prepared for the NFL Draft, saying, “He was always so kind & appreciative of everything I sent him. I joked with him ‘Don’t forget about me when you make it to the NFL!’ He laughed and said ‘Never!'”
Simon’s final season at UAlbany was marked by an impressive performance, with a record of 55 tackles and 12.5 sacks. This performance positioned him as the 448th prospect in the forthcoming NFL draft, as per ESPN rankings.
