Tim Dorsey, an acclaimed author known for his crime-comedy novels featuring Serge A. Storms, has passed away at 62.
Dorsey died at his home in Islamorada, Florida, on Sunday, November 26, 2023. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Born in Indiana, but living in Florida since he was a baby, he had made Florida his home and muse, evident in the vivid backdrops of his popular novels. Raised in Riviera Beach, Florida, Dorsey’s early life and education played a pivotal role in shaping his literary career. He was an Auburn University alumnus and subsequently embarked on a career in journalism. Dorsey worked as a police and court reporter for newspapers in both Alabama and Tampa, Florida. This experience provided him with a rich understanding of Florida lore and crime, elements that would later become a hallmark of his novels.
His foray into fiction writing began with the 1999 publication of “Florida Roadkill.” This debut novel introduced the world to Serge Storms, a character initially conceived as a villain. However, as his work progressed, Storms evolved into a charismatic protagonist. Across 26 novels, Storms and his friend Coleman embarked on road trips across Florida. These narratives were marked by their exploration of Florida’s history, culture, and Dorsey’s unique brand of satirical humor.
