On Sunday, October 22, 2023, an incident unfolded at Harbourside Place shopping mall in Jupiter, Florida. Within a restricted fountain zone, marked with ‘do not climb or swim’ signs, an electrocution took place. This led to the death of an adult and four others, three children among them, being taken to the hospital.

Upon receiving a call about a child in peril near the fountain, which is located in front of a stage at Harbourside Place, both police and paramedics swiftly arrived at the scene. They encountered multiple victims, both young and old, who had been electrocuted.

Those injured were promptly provided medical care. The adults were taken to Jupiter Medical Center, where one later died. The other has since been released. The children were taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center and are on their way to recovery.

Witnesses at the mall gave accounts of what they saw. One described a person attempting to save an adult and child near the water feature but was unable to assist the adult. When first responders arrived, they initially believed they were dealing with a drowning, but soon understood that eight individuals had suffered from electric shocks.

The area around the fountain and the stage was soon restricted for further investigation. Jupiter police, working in collaboration with other agencies, began probing the incident.

The venue of the incident, Harbourside Place, is a go-to spot in Jupiter, Florida. It offers visitors a picturesque waterfront area, shops, dining establishments, and an amphitheater. Notably, there was a clear sign against swimming or climbing in the fountain’s vicinity.

As efforts to understand the cause continue, various agencies, including the town of Jupiter Building Department, Harbourside Place’s management, and Florida Power & Light are working together.

The community has rallied behind the affected individuals, launching crowdfunding initiatives and other supportive actions. To pay respects, locals have been placing flowers, candles, and soft toys by the fountain.
