Michael Jacobs, who was 49 years old and managed a CVS in Mesa, Arizona, encountered Jared Sevey, 38, on September 7 over a theft disagreement.
Earlier that day, Sevey and Jacobs had a dispute concerning shoplifting. The situation escalated when Sevey returned with a weapon, shot Jacobs and subsequently admitted he did it.
This tragedy mirrors other recent events. Last month a Home Depot security guard in the San Francisco Bay Area was attacked after confronting a person believed to be shoplifting.
In another incident this month in Nashville, a Walgreens dispute resulted in the shooting of a pregnant woman accused of shoplifting.
A combination of factors has contributed to these incidents. Policy shifts like California’s Prop 47, which reclassified theft as a misdemeanor rather than a felony, have been pinpointed. Reduced law enforcement visibility post the 2020 calls to divert police funds also could play a part.
Shoplifting has intensified in places such as New York City. Policies like those of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, perceived as lenient on shoplifting suspects, have drawn criticism. In the absence of nationwide guidelines, retailers are often advising employees to avoid direct confrontations with suspected thieves.
The monetary impact on businesses is stark. Retail establishments reported nearly $100 billion in losses due to shoplifting in 2021, with over 63,000 related complaints — a marked rise from earlier years.
New York is taking steps to counteract this trend. Among the measures proposed are pre-trial detentions for repeat offenders, especially those with past felonies and known for evading court proceedings. The Merchants Business Improvement Program offers another avenue, allowing businesses to secure restraining orders against chronic shoplifters.
Amidst these developments, there’s a growing emphasis on ensuring the safety of retail workers and tackling the surge in retail theft incidents.
