A rollercoaster accident resulted in a person plunging to their death and several others falling from atop the ride.
The accident occurred in the Gröna Lund amusement park in Stockholm, Sweden, where witnesses reported seeing the front car of the rollercoaster come off the tracks, causing it to hang precariously close to the ground and ejecting several passengers.
Nine individuals, three of whom were children, were transported to the hospital with injuries from the accident. Eyewitness Ziba Assadi recounted the shocking moment when people fell from the halted car.
In a press conference, Jan Eriksson, CEO of Gröna Lund, referred to the day as a time of mourning for the park. He explained that the rollercoaster derailed at a height between 20 and 25 feet, causing injuries and the death of one passenger out of the 14 onboard.
Onlookers shared accounts of seeing two to three passengers being thrown out of the derailed car, with one photograph capturing a man waiting on a beam under the halted ride.
Jenny Lagerstedt, a journalist who was at the park when the incident occurred, reported hearing an unusual metallic noise and witnessing the track shaking before the accident.
Following the incident, authorities have initiated a criminal investigation to explore possible charges of involuntary manslaughter. Gröna Lund has been evacuated and will remain closed for a week while investigators work to determine the accident’s cause.
