Even after months of investigation, House Republicans who promised to unearth evidence of President Biden’s corruption related to his son Hunter’s business dealings, have yet to present any incriminating material about him. This has not prevented them from making frequent insinuations about Biden and his family’s involvement in criminal conduct.
The White House has condemned the committee’s investigation and maintained that President Biden has never been involved in his son Hunter’s business dealings or in illegal activities.
The House Oversight and Accountability Committee held a press conference on Wednesday and alleged that Hunter Biden created over 20 companies and received millions of dollars from businesses owned by foreign nationals during his father’s vice presidency. The committee claims that these payments could indicate an effort by the Bidens to sell their influence. During its investigation into Hunter Biden’s business ventures and possible influence peddling, the committee is accusing the entire Biden family of concealing the origin and amount of the payments they received from foreign entities.
But the latest committee report does not show that any payments were made directly to President Biden while he was VP or even after he left office.
The committee issued subpoenas to four banks and collected thousands of records to aid its investigation. According to a memo from committee chairman James Comer, Hunter Biden, his business partners, and their companies received millions of dollars from foreign entities.
After Joe Biden became Vice President, Hunter Biden and his partners opened about 15 companies. The committee, led by Republicans, is implying that the Biden family received payments from foreign nationals in order to influence US policy, an assumption that Joe Biden refutes. Hunter Biden allegedly received over $1 million from a foreign company said to be owned by Gabriel Popoviciu, who was under investigation and prosecution for corruption in Romania.Â
The companies also received payments from China, in a joint venture with CEFC, a Chinese energy firm. The committee’s memo accuses the Biden family and their partners of cooperating with Chinese nationals and corporations to commit financial fraud.Â
On the other hand, most of the Republican members of the Committee are known for supporting some unpopular ideas and conspiracy theories, as well as for not recognizing the legitimacy of Biden’s election victory.
Federal prosecutors have been looking at Hunter Biden’s business activities abroad as part of their criminal investigation into him. After months of investigating Hunter Biden, they are only considering charges related to tax issues, not his international business dealings.
On Wednesday, the Republicans had to admit that they have not found any evidence of corrupt action by Joe Biden himself while he was in office as VP. They have not been able to dig up enough dirt tied to the president, their chief political rival, but it has not prevented them from accusing him of wrongdoing related to his son’s actions.
