A tragic incident occurred on May 2nd at a Fort Lauderdale, Florida Walmart when a customer lost his life during a dispute involving an off-duty store employee.
The incident started when 22-year-old Tironie Sterling, an off-duty Walmart staffer, was arguing with a female coworker at the store. The fight rapidly escalated, and Sterling dropped a gun he was carrying, while trying to grab the woman’s phone.
Thierry Bastien, a 41-year-old customer, stepped in to help the female employee. Sterling picked up his weapon and fired several shots at Bastien, resulting in his death.
Chaos erupted inside the store as both employees and customers rushed to find cover. Deputies from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue teams arrived on the scene, finding Bastien critically wounded from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he passed away.
Although Sterling fled the scene, law enforcement captured him a few hours later. Walmart spokesperson Charles Crowson confirmed that Sterling has been suspended and will face termination.
Sterling faces charges of first-degree murder and armed robbery, and is currently being held without bond at the Central Broward County jail.
