Melania Shocks Nation With Brazen New Move

A truce in an occupied Ukrainian city has turned Melania Trump into an unlikely rival to her husband in the one contest he has chased for years.

The ceasefire that First Lady Melania Trump brokered in Oleshky held through its full term, from Oct. 27 to Nov. 1, 2026, and the humanitarian mission it protected is finished. She said nearly 800 people were evacuated from the city in total.

Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman and its chief negotiator in the talks, told a news conference Nov. 2 that Ukraine and Russia agreed not to disclose how many residents went to Ukrainian-controlled areas, how many moved to Russian-controlled territory and how many stayed. Lubinets said the reason was to avoid competition over which side received more people. “As far as I know, everyone is happy to be in Ukraine,” Lubinets said.

Residents who agreed to leave were flown to Gomel, Belarus, then carried by bus into Ukraine, crossing the border Oct. 31. The mission also recovered the bodies of dead civilians and service members from a hospital and morgue in Oleshky and nearby areas, Lubinets said. Crews brought out 105 animals, including dogs, cats and four parrots.

Mines First, Then the Buses

Lubinets had said the route to Oleshky would be cleared of mines before any aid moved or anyone was evacuated. Demining of the access routes began Oct. 27, and both Russia and Ukraine announced its completion on Thursday, Oct. 29. Two people taking part in the clearing operation were killed, according to the authorities. The evacuation started on the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 30, with 25 buses and a capacity of 750 seats.

Lubinets traveled to Oleshky to escort the evacuees personally, in what was described as the first open trip by a high-profile Ukrainian official to Russian-occupied areas since the war began. The truce later expanded across the Kherson region, and drone attacks on Kherson city eased.

Ukraine’s General Staff said Russian forces used the ceasefire to rotate troops, move ammunition and reinforce positions. Lubinets, asked about Sky News footage of Russian vehicles near Oleshky, said the vehicles were marked with red crosses, were clearing mines under Ukrainian monitoring and later returned to their original positions. Both sides reported no ceasefire violations, he said.

Sole Intermediary, the White House Says

The White House announced Friday, Oct. 23, that the first lady had brokered a localized truce in Oleshky, a city in the Kherson region on the Dnipro’s southern bank that Russian forces captured in 2022. Its population has fallen from about 24,000 before the invasion to around 2,000.

Talks opened after she heard of Oleshky’s plight at an event she hosted on the sidelines of September’s U.N. General Assembly, the White House said, and her office called her the agreement’s sole intermediary. Her statement gave a truce start date of Oct. 29 and said the fighting would halt so aid could reach the city and civilians could leave through a designated safe passageway. The Russian and Ukrainian militaries said they would observe it from 0100 GMT Tuesday, Oct. 27, two days before the date she gave. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov welcomed her efforts.

The White House account of a single-handed negotiation has since come under scrutiny, with critics saying credit is owed to Pope Leo XIV. Her office credits her with reuniting more than 30 children with families the war had split apart, and she announced in October 2025 that eight of them had been returned to relatives after back-channel talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A Bet Against Her Husband

Kalshi opened its 2027 Nobel Peace Prize market on Tuesday, Oct. 27, and the first lady, 56, debuted in second place at 4%, behind only Doctors Without Borders at 4.6%. President Donald Trump, 80, opened at 1.1%, trailing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Pope Leo XIV, the Committee to Protect Journalists and the International Criminal Court, which Trump sanctioned in October. The betting interest followed the ceasefire.

Within a few days her Kalshi price fell to 1.2%, level with her husband. The board also carries Yulia Navalnaya and Elon Musk. Polymarket moved the opposite way, with the president at 9%, Zelenskyy at 6% and the first lady at 5%, the eighth favorite on that platform.

Trump lost the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who later gave him her medal. The 2026 award went to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, the former U.N. human rights chief, who led a commission concluding in 2025 that Israel was committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. FIFA President Gianni Infantino handed Trump the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize at the Kennedy Center in December 2025, during the draw for the 2026 World Cup. At a rally Sunday, Oct. 25, two days before the Kalshi market opened, the president complained that he had promised the first lady he would win the 2026 prize, then delivered a profane tirade on Norway.

He has been generous about his wife’s diplomacy, telling reporters she is “doing better than the professionals right now.” The Kremlin said trilateral Ukraine-Russia-U.S. peace talks will resume in Abu Dhabi. Asked whether his wife could take part, Trump replied: “No, but it’s not the worst idea I’ve ever heard.”

The Bar Eleanor Roosevelt Set

Timothy D. Sisk, a University of Denver political scientist who was once a visiting scholar and Fulbright fellow at the Norwegian Nobel Institute, told Newsweek that one local truce is not enough for the 2027 prize in a war where ceasefires keep collapsing. He put the bar closer to Eleanor Roosevelt’s work shaping the 1948 U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Roosevelt was nominated several times and never won.

Frank Rusciano, who teaches American and comparative politics at Rider University, said her chances are remote and that the Oleshky effort falls short of what the prize demands. He added that the president’s limited support for Ukraine damages her case.
