The wife of the nation’s defense chief has no Pentagon job, yet the question of how much power she wields there is now headed to a federal judge.
Democracy Forward, a legal advocacy group, filed suit against the Defense Department on Monday, Sept. 28, 2026, demanding records on Jennifer Hegseth’s access to Pentagon officials, facilities and information. The group said the department confirmed receiving its Freedom of Information Act requests, the earliest of them submitted in 2025, but then went silent and produced no documents.
“Democracy demands transparency,” said Skye Perryman, the group’s president and CEO.
The Elevator Straight to the Secretary’s Suite
The suit came weeks after a report published Wednesday, Aug. 19, by Elisabeth Bumiller, a former Pentagon correspondent for The New York Times. Bumiller described a private elevator that carries Jennifer Hegseth from the parking garage directly into the secretary’s suite, along with a standing line to his chief of staff. No one appeared to know whether she holds a security clearance.
The report said nothing comparable had happened in the building before. “Her involvement in the Defense Department is so unusual that it has led to questions about Mr. Hegseth’s leadership,” Bumiller wrote.
The Spokesman Who Got Grilled
John Ullyot served three months as the secretary’s chief spokesman before leaving the Pentagon. He went into a meeting with Jennifer Hegseth about the job expecting a quick introduction, according to the report, and instead faced 40 minutes of questions about how he would deal with a hostile press corps.
Ullyot said he found it hard to believe a Pentagon chief could pull his wife into sensitive business, including details of a coming military operation, and face no consequences. “Any president deserves better judgment from his national security leaders,” he told the Times.
An administration official who was not named said she encourages her husband’s hard line on the press and helped him bar journalists from the building, an ironic stance for someone who once worked in news herself.
A Fox News Partnership Moves to the Pentagon
The couple met at Fox News, where she produced his segments, and have been married seven years. At the Pentagon she plays a similar role: she preps him for public appearances, sits in on his meetings with reporters, screens candidates for his staff and helps produce department videos, some of which feature her.
She has turned up in the Oval Office, moves around the Pentagon freely and joins her husband on official trips.
Signal Chats and Uneasy British Officials
Her proximity to sensitive information first drew scrutiny in 2025. During the SignalGate controversy, she was a member of a second Signal chat her husband set up, which carried the same warplane launch times he had shared in the first.
That scandal broke in March 2025 after then-national security adviser Mike Waltz mistakenly added Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, to a Signal group that top Trump administration officials were using to plan airstrikes in Yemen. Goldberg later published the messages, including the attack timings Hegseth posted. Waltz was moved out of his post weeks later, and in December 2025 the Pentagon inspector general found that Hegseth had risked the safety of U.S. troops and violated department policy by using a personal phone for official business.
Also in 2025, Jennifer Hegseth sat in on a highly sensitive meeting her husband held with senior British defense officials after the U.S. briefly halted military intelligence sharing with Ukraine. An unnamed Trump administration official told the Times the British delegation was uncomfortable with her presence and withheld additional information until she left.
Her travel has also intersected with policy. The couple was in the Dominican Republic in November 2025 as officials negotiated U.S. use of an air base and an airport for operations against suspected drug traffickers. In April 2026, cameras caught them leaving a House Armed Services Committee hearing on the department’s fiscal 2027 budget request together. Footage also shows her exercising with sailors alongside her husband aboard the USS Boxer in Singapore, and six of the couple’s seven children accompanied them to a D-Day commemoration in Normandy, France.
Her Only Official Title
Jennifer Hegseth does hold one formal role. President Donald Trump appointed her chairwoman of the President’s Military Spouse Commission when he established it by executive order in August, and she presided over the commission’s first meeting at the White House on Monday, Sept. 21, with her husband in attendance.
The August report did not accuse her of breaking any law, and the secretary remains in his job. But the questions it raised about her unofficial role, including whether she has ever held a security clearance, are still unanswered.
