A picture that appeared to show President Donald Trump embracing and kissing a blonde woman on a golf course spread across social media by Monday, September 14, 2026. It is not what it looked like, and on Wednesday, September 16, the White House said so. Both versions in circulation were AI-generated fabrications, according to a later Washington Post analysis, and the sharper one contained an obvious giveaway: a hand with six fingers.
“This is clearly a fake photo,” a White House official, who was not named, told the Daily Beast.
Six Fingers, One Watermark
Social media users passed around two versions of the same fabricated scene: one blurry and low-resolution, one noticeably crisper. The crisper one is where the wheels come off. The woman’s right hand in it has six fingers as she grips a golf club, and the fact-checking site Snopes, in a fact check published September 15, turned up a watermark on that version indicating the picture had been generated with OpenAI tools. Reader emails prompted that review in the first place, which means members of the public were asking the right question while the image was still collecting views.
The lower-resolution version was initially harder to assess. Snopes said in its September 18 update that its authenticity remained inconclusive. But a September 19 Washington Post analysis using OpenAI and Google detection tools found that both circulating versions were AI-generated. Hany Farid, co-founder of the deepfake detection company GetReal, said the most likely sequence was that the high-resolution image came first and the blurry version was later degraded, possibly to obscure the AI watermark. The original creator of the image has not been identified.”
Then there is the small matter of the entire professional photography industry coming up empty. The Associated Press, Reuters and Getty Images archives yielded no corresponding photograph when searched; a review of major wire services found no genuine picture of Trump and White House aide Natalie Harp both dressed in white on a golf course, and no credible news organization or tabloid was found to have published the image. Trump did golf at his Trump Organization-owned course in Ireland on September 13 — but photographs and satellite views of that course show no trees, unlike the fabricated image.
Traced to a YouTube Thumbnail
Political commentator Keith Edwards posted a YouTube video on September 14 whose thumbnail, according to a reverse image search using Google Lens, is the oldest known appearance of the picture. His thumbnail team came across the picture online rather than creating or altering it, Edwards said, and had not independently verified where it originated. Only the back of the woman’s head is visible. “I don’t think her identity can be confirmed from this image alone,” he told Snopes.
Pictures that first surfaced as thumbnails on Edwards’ videos have come before Snopes twice already, and he confirmed in one of those cases that he had used an AI tool to generate the image. X, Threads and Instagram users, meanwhile, posted the fabricated picture widely. One X post sharing the images had garnered more than 1.4 million views, with others in the tens of thousands. Because the low-resolution version did not display the same red flags, Snopes left the claim unrated pending further evidence, and said it would update its report if more information surfaces.
Who Natalie Harp Is
An anchor and host at One America News until she left that role, Natalie Harp, 35, has worked for Trump since 2022. Her title is executive assistant to the president — her financial disclosure identifies her as special assistant to the president and executive assistant to the president — and the job pays a taxpayer-funded salary of $150,000 a year. Colleagues have nicknamed her the “human printer,” a tag she earned by remaining beside Trump to handle whatever he wants done: collecting merchandise, running Google searches, printing out stories on a portable printer and floating ideas for Truth Social posts.
The White House this month defended $45,000 Christmas gifts to Harp and two other aides revealed in administration financial disclosures; a spokesperson told Newsweek they were “entirely permissible under relevant legal and ethical standards.”
The delegation on Trump’s two-day visit to Ireland on September 12 and 13 included her as well, which is part of why she turns up in so many recent photographs — real ones, taken by actual photographers, with the standard number of fingers. Publicly, Harp has said nothing about the image.
Harp has remained at Trump’s side since the image went viral. On Monday, September 21, she traveled with Trump as he departed Washington for New York, where the president met Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion ahead of his United Nations address the following day.
The White House’s Six Words
A White House official gave a longer version of the denial to Newsweek: “This is clearly a fake photo. Of course this is coming from Democrats who have nothing of substance so instead they peddle fake images.” Genuine photographs of Trump and Harp golfing, which could have been lined up against the fabrication for comparison, never reached Snopes from the White House.
The lesson here is cheaper than any detection software: before sharing a startling picture, count the fingers.
