For a few minutes of the first quarter Monday, September 14, 2026, the biggest story in Kansas City was nowhere near the grass. Pop icon Taylor Swift had returned to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium for the Kansas City Chiefs’ season opener against the Denver Broncos, and television cameras found her in a suite, deep in conversation with actor Tom Cruise.
The league leaned in, pushing a video clip of the two sitting side by side onto X during the game. “Taylor Swift and Tom Cruise in the house for MNF,” the league posted. The charm was not universal. Some viewers grumbled that the broadcast kept leaving the football for the suite. “I don’t need Tom Cruise to spoil the show by sitting next to Taylor,” one complained.
Others tried to figure out what the two were actually talking about. By September 15, a photo of the pair was circulating on the Reddit community r/travisandtaylor under the caption “Cult leader 🤝 cult leader enjoying a very engrossing chat at tonight’s Chiefs game in KC.” A user in that thread, who said they were not a professional lip-reader, guessed the conversation was about the game, citing words including “overtime” and “six to one.”
A Suite Seat Beside a Movie Star
Swift herself had a limit. At one point during the September 14 game, she demanded that the broadcast cameras stop showing her, according to a September 18 report.
Her top was red and white checkered, in keeping with the color scheme she has favored for trips to Arrowhead. The league’s clip showed her sipping a drink as she talked with the actor. Photographers got the pair toward the end of the first quarter, with Swift in her usual perch — the luxury suite belonging to Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
Neither spent much of the night sitting. Every Chiefs score brought hugs and high-fives, and the cameras kept finding Swift celebrating touchdown after touchdown with the movie star at her side. The Chiefs gave them plenty of chances.
There was an extra layer to the night. This was Swift’s first big public outing since she and Kelce tied the knot in early July 2026, and Cruise had been one of the A-list guests at the wedding — which made the suite pairing feel less like a random seating chart and more like a reunion.
Cruise Talks Swift’s Football Smarts With Jimmy Fallon
Cruise took the Arrowhead outing to “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” telling the host he had not been to an NFL game since before the pandemic and was, per the report, blown away by what Swift knew about football at the September 14 game. “Oh she knows her stuff,” he said. The Tonight Show posted the clip to X on September 18.
It was not always that way, Cruise said. “No, she knew nothing about football when she met Travis. She was asking things like, ‘What was it like playing against your brother?’ and ‘Did you tackle each other?’” He added: “I told Travis and he was very patient. She said, ‘He is so patient.’ I just said, ‘I’m sure he was’.”
Back in Her Usual Arrowhead Seat
Swift has been a regular at Chiefs games since 2023, the year she began dating Kelce. She first watched him play in September 2023, when Kansas City hosted the Chicago Bears. Last season she showed up less often, and her most recent photographed appearance at a game came in October 2025. Over the past two years she has stuck to Chiefs home games during the regular season, so a Week 1 opener in Kansas City was ideal timing.
Monday’s game also explains why she was not on a red carpet. Swift picked Arrowhead over the 2026 Emmy Awards, though she still made the telecast, appearing in a pre-recorded sketch on NBC’s Emmys broadcast that worked in several references to her husband. She has grown friendly, too, with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany Mahomes.
Mahomes Returns, Walker Runs Wild
The football itself came down to a comeback and a debut. Mahomes returned under center after tearing his ACL and LCL in December 2025, completing 15 of 27 passes for 184 yards with an interception. He also scrambled 15 yards for a first-quarter touchdown.
Running back Kenneth Walker III announced himself in his Chiefs debut, piling up 173 rushing yards and a touchdown, among them a 60-yard sprint in the third quarter, and adding 18 receiving yards and a second score. Denver quarterback Bo Nix finished 17 of 28 for 131 yards, throwing his lone touchdown to tight end Evan Engram in the first quarter. Kansas City ran for 220 yards and threw for 184, while Denver managed 176 in total.
The 31-10 final put the Chiefs at 1-0 in the AFC West and left Denver 0-1. The teams had not met since the Broncos beat Kansas City on Christmas Day 2025. Kickoff, which closed out Week 1, came at 8:15 p.m. ET / 5:15 p.m. PT, with the game airing live on both ABC and ESPN and streaming on Disney+.
Kelce Climbs the All-Time List
Kelce had something to celebrate as well. He put up 71 receiving yards against the Broncos in the season opener, moving to No. 2 on the career receiving yardage list among tight ends at 13,079 yards and passing former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, who finished with 13,046. Ahead of him now sits only former Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez, with 15,127.
Kelce, in his 14th NFL season, has said of continuing to play: “I still have the desire to go out there and compete, and I still think I can compete at a high level.”
The “Monday Night Football” broadcast cut away at one point to Kelce’s box, where Swift was jumping up and down. Two of the most famous people alive talked through the first quarter and hugged over touchdowns in a football suite, and Kansas City finished the night 1-0. Opening night delivered on both counts.
