A spokesperson for First Lady Melania Trump has cut her out of the uproar over the wedding celebration of Donald Trump Jr., President Donald Trump’s eldest son, saying in a statement to the Daily Mail on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, that the first lady has never had a relationship with the Russian oligarch whose money helped pay for the festivities.
“Mrs. Trump does not, and has never had, a relationship with Mr. Kremlev,” the spokesperson said. “Mrs. Trump played no role whatsoever in organizing the wedding event and was not privy to any aspect of its financial planning.”
The statement came after an investigative report found that Umar Kremlev, a Russian businessman connected to Russian President Vladimir Putin, heavily financed the May wedding celebration of Trump Jr. and his bride, Bettina Trump. Kremlev paid hundreds of thousands of dollars, in part to rent a private island in the Bahamas for an afterparty that included fireworks.
Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Trump have said Kremlev gave them the gifts out of friendship. Trump Jr. announced the engagement — his bride was then known as Bettina Anderson — at a White House holiday bash.
The President Distances Himself, Too
The president also separated himself from the celebration while brushing aside the businessman’s role in it. He said he had never heard of Kremlev and that Kremlev had not paid for his son’s wedding, which the president said took place at a different location and on a different day.
“It was an ‘after-party’ given in their honor. Not a big deal!” the president said.
According to the report, specialists in national security have voiced unease about the financial tie between Trump Jr. and a man with documented links to Putin, the leader of a country treated as a hostile power. The president’s son Eric Trump has weighed in on the gift in terms that cut against his brother’s defense of it.
An Earlier Public Disavowal
In April, the first lady issued her own public rejection of a very different story, rebutting claims that tied her to the financier Jeffrey Epstein. She said the lies connecting her to Epstein needed to stop and that the people telling them lacked ethics, humility and respect.
“I’ve never been friends with Epstein,” she said. She said she and Donald Trump were occasionally invited to the same parties as Epstein because overlapping social circles are common in New York City and Palm Beach, that she was not Epstein’s victim, and that Epstein did not introduce her to her husband. She said she met Donald Trump by chance at a party in 1998.
A Year of Limited Appearances
The statement about Kremlev arrived during a stretch in which Melania Trump’s schedule has drawn as much attention as her words. She had made 38 public appearances in 2026 as of August 19, and her last public appearance had been the World Cup final on July 19. Her calendar thinned to five public appearances across June and July, two of them sporting events. By one analysis, she had logged only half the public appearances at this point in her husband’s second term that she had managed by the same stage of his first.
By August 19, she had gone 30 days without appearing in public, skipping high-profile events her husband attended, among them the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and the funeral of Lindsey Graham. As of that date, she had delivered 29 speeches since the president returned to office last year, compared with the 130 former First Lady Michelle Obama gave over a similar period. The pattern is not new: during the president’s first term, her frequent absences fed conspiracy theories, including one that she used a body double.
That does not mean she has been off camera. She starred in an eponymous documentary released in January, and as of August 19 a companion docuseries was scheduled for release on Amazon Prime in the autumn. In her absence, Trump aide Natalie Harp — a 35-year-old former One America News Network presenter who joined the president’s staff in 2022 and who reportedly helps manage his Truth Social account — has rarely left his side. Harp accompanied him on a May state visit to China that the first lady did not attend.
As of September 16, three accounts of the Bahamas celebration stood side by side: the president described the gathering as an afterparty held in the couple’s honor, Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Trump described Kremlev’s spending as gifts from a friend, and a spokesperson for the first lady said she had no part in the event or in how it was paid for.
