Tyler Duckworth, who won MTV’s “The Challenge” twice and became one of the competition series’ most beloved figures following his debut on “The Real World: Key West,” will be remembered at a memorial service on Aug. 22, 2026. The 44-year-old world history and social science teacher at Valley Middle School was found dead in his North Dakota apartment on Aug. 11, 2026, after his downstairs neighbor reported water leaking through their ceiling.
His mother, Joni Duckworth, announced his passing on Facebook on Aug. 13, noting that she and his father were finalizing arrangements. Some of Tyler’s close friends are now working on a fund to honor him and support Valley Middle School.
Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio, who was once Duckworth’s roommate in Key West, Fla., is among those paying tribute to the reality television star.
Authorities in Grand Forks discovered Duckworth’s body in a bathroom. Police investigators saw no signs of criminal activity and found nothing unusual surrounding the death. Toxicology results are pending, and no cause of death has been determined.
From Real World to Challenge Champion
The Minneapolis, Minn., native entered the reality television landscape in 2006 as a cast member on “The Real World: Key West.” That season, he forged a close bond with Paula Meronek and began a contentious relationship with Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio that would eventually evolve into one of the franchise’s most memorable alliances.
Across six “Challenge” seasons — “The Duel,” “The Gauntlet III,” “Cutthroat,” “Rivals,” “All Stars 2” and “All Stars 3” — Duckworth proved himself a formidable athlete and compelling personality. His consecutive victories stand as a highlight in the show’s history. In 2010, he secured the “Cutthroat” championship alongside Brad Fiorenza, Dunbar Merrill and Tori Fiorenza. The following year, he partnered with Bananas on “Rivals,” and the duo claimed the grand prize in 2011.
By the time he returned for “All Stars 3” in 2022 — his final franchise appearance — Duckworth was working as a middle and high school teacher. He told Entertainment Weekly that financial incentives had taken a back seat to personal motivation. “This sounds really sappy, but when you’ve already won, especially two in a row, for me it was more about: I just want to compete,” he said. “I want to see if I still have it, if I can jump off crazy-high things or if I can do puzzles.”
Final Appearance With Fellow Competitors
Eleven days before his mother publicly confirmed his death, Duckworth attended a “Challenge Mania” podcast fan event on Aug. 2 in Minneapolis. The gathering, hosted by franchise alum and show co-host Derrick Kosinski alongside comedian Scott Yager, brought together Rachel Robinson, Brad Fiorenza, Tina Barta and Mark Long. “The fans are what keep us coming out,” he wrote. “Hearing your stories of courage, inspiration and joy that you’ve got being a fan of the franchise is humbling each and every time.”
Tina Barta, reflecting on that event after learning of Duckworth’s passing, described their farewell as unexpectedly meaningful. She wrote that his appearance surprised her and that they embraced one last time — that neither of them wanted to part. “We never do,” she wrote. “I love you.”
Derrick Kosinski, who roomed with Duckworth on “All Stars 2,” recalled his radiant personality. Speaking to People, he described Duckworth as someone who brought tremendous brightness and joy to those around him, and recounted how Duckworth defeated him in a “Cutthroat” elimination.
Remembrances From the Franchise Community
Bananas acknowledged the loss on social media with a short, heartfelt post accompanied by a heart emoji and a duck emoji. Fellow Challenge competitor Wes Bergmann shared a lengthier remembrance, describing Duckworth as “a remarkable man and a great friend to many” who made “fantastic television.” Bergmann closed with an appeal to his followers: “Call your friends people.”
Bunim/Murray Productions, which produces both “The Challenge” and “The Real World,” issued a statement calling Duckworth “truly part of the Bunim/Murray family” and “an exceptional human being” cherished by viewers and co-stars throughout his many seasons. The company offered heartfelt sympathies to his loved ones and the entire fan community.
The family has since finalized the arrangements. A visitation is set for 1 p.m. Aug. 22, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at Augustana Lutheran Church, 520 University Ave. in Grand Forks, N.D. No additional information about the circumstances surrounding his death is expected until toxicology results are completed.
