Harrison Ford Issues Surprising Announcement

Harrison Ford’s connection to Indiana Jones is getting a permanent monument. The 84-year-old actor revealed on August 15, 2026, that he’s lending his physical likeness to a Disney animatronic for “Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent,” a new ride opening in the Tropical Americas area at Animal Kingdom in Bay Lake, Fla. The news arrived through a video message broadcast at the D23 fan event.

Ford’s participation marks a first. Lucasfilm said it is the first time his face has appeared on a Disney attraction anywhere in the world, and his video to D23 attendees acknowledged the significance. He thanked audiences for joining him on the character’s journey across the years and confirmed he would soon visit Walt Disney World to help complete the project.

A Six-Decade Career Still Going Strong

The theme park announcement comes as Ford continues to defy expectations about what’s possible in one’s ninth decade. Just last month, he was photographed cycling through Los Angeles, displaying a remarkably fit physique that contradicts any notion of slowing down. On March 1, the actor accepted the SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award at the Actor Awards, telling the room: “I’m at the half point of my career. I’m still a working actor.”

That six-decade career, which began with a bit part in 1966, includes two of cinema’s most enduring characters: Han Solo and the archaeology professor who first appeared in Steven Spielberg’s 1981 hit “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Ford and Spielberg collaborated again on 1984’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and 1989’s “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” with a fourth film, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” arriving in 2008.

Reviving the Property After a Setback

The franchise has generated $2.3 billion worldwide across five films. However, the 2023 installment “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” failed to meet financial expectations, creating an opening for Disney to refresh the property through a different medium. The Animal Kingdom attraction provides that opportunity, allowing the company to tap into nostalgia while introducing younger audiences to the character.

Ford’s D23 message highlighted one detail certain to amuse longtime fans: the Indiana Jones animatronic will incorporate the character’s famous ophidiophobia, his fear of snakes — fitting for a ride whose story centers on a serpentine creature called the Tsukán. He delivered the announcement with his trademark dry humor, suggesting his personal involvement in the ride’s development would continue in the coming months.

Social Media Erupts With Enthusiasm

Disney Parks shared Ford’s announcement on Instagram, triggering an avalanche of fan responses. Commenters proclaimed the actor irreplaceable, with many insisting no one else should ever portray the adventurer. One fan wrote that Ford’s legacy would be forever enshrined through the attraction, capturing the sentiment of audiences who have followed the character for more than 40 years.

The enthusiasm reflects the deep cultural imprint Indiana Jones has left since the early 1980s. For multiple generations, Ford’s portrayal has defined the archetype of the rugged, whip-cracking explorer, and the prospect of his likeness being permanently preserved in animatronic form struck fans as a fitting tribute.

An Enduring Presence in Hollywood

Beyond the theme park project, Ford remains active in television and film. His work on “Shrinking” continues, demonstrating his commitment to staying engaged with new material even as he approaches 85. The combination of ongoing projects and his willingness to revisit signature roles ensures his visibility across multiple platforms.

“Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent” represents Disney’s bet that the original actor’s appeal transcends generations. By securing Ford as the physical template for the ride’s centerpiece figure, the company is cementing a tangible link between past and future — ensuring that visitors to one of the world’s busiest theme parks will encounter the authentic face of a character who has shaped adventure storytelling for decades.
