3 Killed in Helicopter Honeymoon Crash

Three people died when a helicopter carrying British newlyweds on their honeymoon plunged into a hillside on the Greek island of Sifnos on Aug. 17, 2026, erupting into flames on impact. Investigators are now examining whether a tail rotor malfunction caused the Bell 206 aircraft to spin out of control in the moments before the crash.

Greece’s aviation safety authority confirmed it was investigating the crash and that its investigators were heading to the scene on Tuesday, Aug. 18, to gather evidence and speak to witnesses. Greek media reported that the civil aviation authority had recalled Bell 206 helicopters until further notice, though the authority has not confirmed a fleet-wide grounding.

Marie Ebert, 30, and Alexander Cromie, 31, died alongside pilot Giorgos Raikos, 53, when their private air taxi crashed near the Monastery of Panagia Vrysiani in the Tholos area at around 6:15 p.m. local time. The wreckage landed roughly 50 meters from nearby homes and the intended landing zone, sending a column of thick black smoke into the sky visible across the Aegean island.

Fireball Followed Rapid Descent

CCTV cameras recorded the aircraft spinning violently and dropping altitude rapidly before it struck the ground. Fire consumed the wreckage immediately after impact. Two firefighters and a fire engine rushed to the arid hillside crash site, while a rescue team from Syros traveled by the Fire Department’s RAFNAR speedboat to assist. Emergency crews discovered all three occupants dead on arrival, and an alarm that sounded across Sifnos alerted residents to the disaster.

Witnesses near the scene reported hearing unusual sounds just before the helicopter went down. Manolis Fountoulakis, the deputy mayor of Sifnos, relayed what residents told authorities: “It experienced mechanical failure in the air, residents say it made a loud, strange noise, like military aircraft.”

Greece’s civil aviation authority noted signs of a possible malfunction in the helicopter’s tail rotor performance, though official confirmation of the cause awaits completion of the investigation. Authorities are examining all available evidence, including footage of the aircraft’s final moments.

Finance Professionals on Dream Vacation

The couple had departed from Markopoulo, a village southeast of Athens, and were expected to land at approximately 6:20 p.m. local time. They opted for the helicopter to avoid a ferry journey that could take up to five hours from the mainland to the Cyclades island.

Marie Ebert worked as a senior specialist at Bain & Company, according to her LinkedIn page. The University of Exeter graduate, fluent in German, had spent time at investment firm Coller Capital before joining the London office of the global consulting giant in July 2025. Her role focused on market reputation within one of the industry’s so-called “Big Three” firms, and her professional background spanned asset management, private equity, and consulting.

Alexander Cromie worked as a vice president in private wealth solutions at Blackstone, having worked there for four years, first as an associate in private wealth solutions before being made a vice president in January. The Bristol native graduated from the University of Sheffield with a degree in economics and had previously held positions with NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland, and BNP Paribas prior to joining the U.S. investment management firm’s London office.

Ebert’s social media profiles showed trips to the Caribbean, the French Riviera, and northern Italy’s lake districts.

Employers Express Devastation

Bain & Company issued a detailed statement describing Marie Ebert as “a much-loved and deeply respected member of our London team” who was “exceptional at her job, admired by everyone who worked with her, and had an extraordinary future ahead of her.” The company said they are “devastated” and “doing everything we can to support her family and colleagues at this time.” The consulting company also expressed sympathy for the families of Cromie and Raikos.

A representative from Blackstone conveyed the firm’s sorrow following the tragedy, with a spokesperson saying: “We are shocked by the tragic passing of three people including our colleague Alex Cromie and his wife Marie Ebert, who were celebrating their honeymoon.”

Pilot Giorgos Raikos was a father of three with experience flying military aircraft who had joined the company approximately two months prior to the accident. Those familiar with him described him as highly experienced. Greek officials offered their condolences to the families of all three victims, who have been notified of the deaths. The speed and intensity of the fire left no chance of survival for anyone aboard the aircraft, which went down just minutes before its scheduled landing time.
