Pakistani rescue crews on Friday, July 10, pressed into a third day of searching for five crew members lost after a K2 Airways cargo Boeing 737 plunged into the Arabian Sea on Tuesday night, July 7, as aviation experts warned the recovery could rank among the most challenging in the nation’s recent history.
The 27-year-old converted freighter had departed Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates and was bound for Karachi when it vanished from radar roughly 155 nautical miles (287 km) west of the city. Wreckage was located 53 nautical miles south of Ormara port and pulled from the water on Wednesday, the Pakistan Airports Authority confirmed. Rescuers have since recovered additional debris from the sea as efforts to reach the missing crew continue.
The plane had spent 10 days in Sharjah undergoing repairs and awaiting a spare part from the US before the ill-fated flight. The co-pilot has been identified as Faisal Jatoi, who has a wife and a two-year-old son. His father-in-law is Ghulam Nabi Bahrani.
The Final Minute
At 9:18 p.m. Pakistan Standard Time (4:18 p.m. GMT) on Tuesday night, the crew reported a navigational system problem to air traffic control. Three minutes later, radar systems showed the aircraft descending rapidly. Flight-tracking data indicated the plane dropped about 5,000 feet in less than a minute — a steep, near-vertical fall rather than a controlled glide. Early data suggested the freighter had made a series of sharp altitude changes before that final descent. Local air traffic control tried to guide the aircraft as it went down, but communication was lost and the plane disappeared from screens southwest of Karachi.
Hazards Hampering the Recovery
A Pakistani aviation expert stated that the recovery operation could be among the most difficult in Pakistan’s recent history. Water depths ranging from about 2,500 to more than 3,500 metres in parts of the Arabian Sea are complicating efforts. Strong currents, poor visibility, uneven seabed terrain and changing sea states are also hampering the search.
Multiple agencies deployed air- and sea-borne assets following the crash. The Pakistan Navy and the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency joined the coordinated search-and-rescue operation, and an investigation team is examining the wreckage pieces retrieved so far. A Puzzling Descent
What caused the aircraft to fall remains unclear. Aviation expert Imran Aslam, speaking to local broadcaster ARY News, said it was not yet known why the plane vanished from radar. He pointed to a detail that has puzzled observers: even a total engine failure would typically allow an aircraft to continue gliding rather than fall out of the sky.
“I still cannot understand how the plane went down so abruptly instead of gliding,” Aslam said.
A gliding descent, even after catastrophic mechanical trouble, can buy pilots precious minutes to manage an emergency or attempt a controlled ditching. A sudden plunge of thousands of feet in under a minute points to something more severe. The reported navigational system problem may or may not be connected to the crash; authorities have not linked the two beyond noting the timeline.
K2 Airways said it was working alongside the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority and relevant government bodies to support the search and inquiry. In a statement, the carrier expressed hope for its crew, saying it continued to pray for their safety.
Investigators cannot definitively determine what occurred until the debris and the black boxes, which contain flight data and cockpit recordings, are fully recovered and analyzed. The loss of a Boeing 737 will inevitably draw scrutiny, given the intense global focus the manufacturer’s aircraft have faced in recent years. Investigators in past crashes have relied on physical evidence pulled from wreckage — in one earlier disaster involving a 737, a small device recovered from the debris helped establish how the plane had been configured before impact.
