At the dedication of the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago on June 18, 2026, former President Joe Biden remained on stage near the podium after other dignitaries had departed, asking into a live microphone, “Where’s my granddaughter?”
The 83-year-old Biden appeared disoriented as the ceremony concluded, standing alone while former President Barack Obama and others had already exited. Video from the event captured Biden lowering his sunglasses and scanning the crowd, seemingly unaware that the program had moved on.
A source familiar with the moment later told Fox News Digital that he was searching for his granddaughter, who was seated in the crowd. Daily Mail lip-reader Nicola Hickling said Biden also appeared to ask “Where are the children?” before mentioning his granddaughter, though that portion was not audible and was based solely on visual interpretation. The video showed him removing his glasses and looking into the audience before he eventually walked off stage, at which point the clip ended.
The high-profile event on Chicago’s South Side brought together former presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Biden, and Obama to mark the opening of the Obama Presidential Center. Former Vice President Kamala Harris was also in attendance. Musical performances by Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Bono, John Legend, and Christina Aguilera were part of the ceremony.
Footage showed Obama exiting the stage to upbeat music, at one point pretending to play air guitar, followed by a smiling former First Lady Jill Biden. Neither appeared to notice that Joe Biden was still behind. Additional video showed Biden seeming to look for guidance as guests and performers moved around the stage, until Jill Biden returned to help him.
Washington Examiner columnist Guy Benson commented that the episode of confusion doesn’t paint a good image for Democrats. Biden’s son Hunter Biden responded angrily to the footage, saying that Obama leading his father off the stage by the hand really pissed me off.
During the ceremony, Obama offered praise for his former vice president, telling the audience, “To Joe and Jill, thank you for being on this journey with us,” and expressing gratitude to the assembled former leaders for their friendship, counsel, and devotion to the country.
The incident quickly became a topic of online discussion as the dedication ceremony unfolded. The appearance was one of Biden’s most prominent public engagements in recent months. Since leaving the White House as the oldest president in US history, he has largely remained out of the public eye and continues treatment for stage-four prostate cancer that has spread to his bones.
The Obama Center opening took place the same week The New Yorker Radio Hour released a podcast interview recorded on June 16, 2026, at New York’s 92nd Street Y, in which former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticized Biden’s decision to run for reelection in 2024. Clinton called the choice a terrible miscalculation, arguing that stepping aside would have allowed Democrats to hold a competitive primary.
“Very sadly, I believe whoever emerged from that contest, whether it was the vice president or a governor or a senator or anybody else, would have beaten Donald Trump,” Clinton said. She characterized Biden’s decision to stay in the race as harmful to himself, his legacy, and the country, leaving the party in a difficult position once he eventually withdrew.
The episode renewed scrutiny that has followed Biden since his 2024 debate against Trump, after which prominent Democrats urged him to leave the race weeks later. He was replaced at the top of the ticket by Harris, who went on to lose to Trump in November.
The opening ceremony, held at John Lewis Plaza, drew celebrities, musicians, and former world leaders to Chicago’s South Side for the dedication of the center honoring Obama’s eight years in office.
