Trump, 79, Snaps at Female Reporter Again

On March 31, 2026, President Donald Trump attacked a female journalist, labeling NewsNation White House Correspondent Libbey Dean a “fresh person” and asserting “we’ve had a lot of problems with you” in a heated Oval Office confrontation. The president, age 79, lost his temper while answering questions regarding Iran military operations after putting his signature on an executive order concerning mail-in voting.

The altercation began when Dean tried to inquire about whether Iran needed to negotiate an agreement with the United States to halt military actions and whether Trump had communicated personally with Iranian leaders. While Trump started responding that no agreement was required, Dean interrupted to make her question clearer, prompting the president to lose his composure.

“Wait a minute. Do you want me to answer the question? You’re a fresh person. You know? We’ve had a lot of problems with you, haven’t we?” Trump said.

This episode represents another confrontation between Trump and women in journalism. Last November, the president addressed Bloomberg White House Correspondent Catherine Lucey as “Quiet, piggy,” after she inquired about the Epstein files. In the middle of March, he labeled an ABC reporter a “very obnoxious person” for questioning him about troop deployments. Male journalists seldom receive comparable treatment, although Trump did inform a male Newsmax reporter the previous week that he was “not doing a very good job.”

The Tuesday interaction started with Dean questioning gas prices reaching $4.00 during the Iran conflict. Trump continuously cut off her efforts to finish her questions, maintaining Americans were feeling “a lot safer” regardless of the economic consequences. As Dean kept trying to redirect him to her initial question regarding whether an agreement was needed to conclude operations, Trump’s anger escalated.

Following his criticism of Dean, Trump proceeded with his response. He declared that Iran doesn’t need to negotiate a deal, and that the U.S. would depart “when we feel that they are for a long period of time, put into the Stone Ages, and they won’t be able to come up with a nuclear weapon.” Any deal, he stated, was “irrelevant.”

The White House Rapid Response team applauded the altercation on social media, sharing “@POTUS nukes a rude @LibbeyDean_ after being interrupted.” This presentation portrayed Trump as protecting himself from an impolite journalist instead of addressing the core issues of her questions about U.S. military operations in Iran.

Trump dedicated roughly 30 minutes responding to questions from reporters following the signing of the executive order aimed at mail-in voting, a voting method Trump himself utilized in a Florida election the previous week. The president characterized the order as “foolproof,” although election authorities deemed it unconstitutional. Trump rejected possible legal obstacles, claiming only “rogue judges” and “very bad judges” would stop it.

Throughout the extensive press session, Trump also discussed the continuing Iran conflict, announcing that military operations would wrap up within 2 to 3 weeks. The president had plans to give a primetime address to the nation on Wednesday evening regarding the war, which started Feb. 28 when the U.S. and Israel conducted surprise airstrikes on Iran, killing Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other officials. Iran has subsequently responded with strikes on U.S. bases, allied countries, and commercial shipping—including a recent attack on a Kuwaiti oil tanker off Dubai.

Trump shifted from the Iran topic to criticize the media in general terms, asserting the press had forfeited credibility with the American public. He contended that prevailing in a “landslide” despite getting “93 to 97 percent” negative coverage demonstrated that “people don’t believe the press,” which he described as “a very bad thing for our country.”

The recurring nature of Trump’s confrontations with female media personalities has attracted growing attention. Merely a week following the Dean episode, Trump went to Truth Social on April 6 to insist that Fox News terminate “The Five” liberal panelist Jessica Tarlov, describing her as “one of the worst ‘personalities’ on television, a real loser.” He simultaneously criticized Fox News Sunday anchor Shannon Bream in the identical post, alleging her failure to challenge Democratic guests. White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson stated Trump’s attacks have “nothing to do with gender” and “everything to do with the fact that the president’s and the public’s trust in the media is at an all-time low.”

Critics contend the president uses a double standard, accepting or even commending forceful questioning from male journalists while labeling equivalent conduct from women as unsuitable or disrespectful. The Society of Professional Journalists described Trump’s treatment of female reporters as “part of an unmistakable pattern of hostility” that “undermines the essential role of a free and independent press.”

Dean had additionally tried to ask Trump regarding his strategy to reduce gas prices and how the Iranian conflict impacts regular Americans. Trump avoided most of her questions, choosing instead to emphasize stock market results and his description of Iran’s new regime as “reasonable” and “accessible.”

The episode arrives as Trump confronts increasing criticism regarding the Iran intervention, escalating gas prices, and his divisive executive order on voting limitations. Democrats and voting rights organizations have previously submitted lawsuits contesting the mail-in voting order, establishing another legal confrontation for the administration.
