Prince Harry’s Harsh Words About King Charles

Prince Harry’s recent public comments about parenting have sparked fresh controversy, with royal commentators questioning whether the Duke of Sussex truly appreciates the behind-the-scenes support his father, King Charles, has provided throughout the ongoing family rift.

The 41-year-old prince, now residing in Montecito, California, with wife Meghan Markle, 44, has urged parents to “upgrade” from previous generational behavior—comments that have not gone unnoticed by those close to the royal family. The remarks come as Harry continues to navigate a complex relationship with his father, whom he hasn’t seen regularly since stepping back as a senior royal.

Royal commentator Kinsey Schofield and broadcaster Rupert Bell recently discussed the ongoing tensions, with the situation taking on new dimensions following Harry’s emotional BBC interview in May 2025, where he revealed his father “won’t speak to me because of this security stuff.” The Duke had just lost his security court case appeal and appeared visibly distressed during the conversation with the BBC’s Nada Tawfik near his Santa Barbara, California, home.

Legendary royal photographer Arthur Edwards observed a striking change in Harry’s demeanor during that interview. “He looked so sad in that, and so really down and not upbeat like he was normally,” Edwards noted. “I feel somehow he’s having probably second thoughts. Maybe this is not such a great idea.”

The strained relationship between father and son has dragged on since Harry and Meghan stepped back as senior royals in early 2020. During the BBC interview, Harry acknowledged the depth of the family divisions, stating: “There have been so many disagreements, differences between me and some of my family. This current situation – ongoing for 5 years – is the sticking point. Of course some members of my family will never forgive me for writing the book, for lots of things.”

The “book” Harry referenced is his bombshell memoir “Spare,” released in January 2023, which contained numerous revelations about the royal family. Combined with the couple’s Netflix documentary series, the publication created significant tension between Harry and his relatives, including his brother Prince William and stepmother Queen Camilla.

Despite the ongoing tensions, signs of a potential thaw have emerged. In September 2025, Harry met his father for tea at Clarence House for the first time in 19 months—a significant development given King Charles’s ongoing cancer treatment. According to The Sun, a full review of the Sussex family’s security needs is underway, which could pave the way for King Charles to finally see his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet.

Royal experts have noted a shift in the Sussexes’ approach to their public profile. Pauline Maclaran, co-author of “Royal Fever” and Professor of Marketing and Consumer Research at Royal Holloway, University of London, observed that the couple appears to be treading more carefully. “It seems to me that Harry and Meghan are trying to not cause any more controversies as far as their royal relatives are concerned. I feel they have been on their best behavior recently,” she told The Royal Observer.

However, this hasn’t stopped speculation and criticism. ITV Royal Editor Chris Ship suggested that Harry’s public plea for reconciliation in the BBC interview might have backfired. The concern among royal insiders is that private family matters shared with Harry could end up in the public realm, making reconciliation even more challenging.

Bronte Coy, News.com.au’s Royal Correspondent, noted Harry’s apparent internal struggle during the May interview. “For better or worse, Meghan’s forging ahead with her path. But seeing Harry look exactly as you say, looking so defeated. But from that interview and the things he was saying, it just appears he seems quite stuck,” she observed.

Adding to the couple’s challenges, they’ve been accused of attempting to rewrite history regarding their 2017 engagement interview with BBC presenter Mishal Husain. In their Netflix docuseries, Meghan described the interview as an “orchestrated reality show,” prompting pushback from Husain and royal commentators who noted contradictions between the couple’s various public statements over the years.

The question now is whether Harry’s public stance on parenting and his calls for generational change acknowledge the support King Charles has attempted to provide, even amid their differences. Royal watchers note that the King has consistently left the door open for reconciliation, despite the hurt caused by the revelations in “Spare” and the couple’s various media appearances.

As the situation continues to evolve, with a security review underway and tentative steps toward reconciliation being taken, the royal family drama remains far from resolved. Whether Harry’s parenting advice reflects genuine self-reflection or further distances him from his father remains a matter of intense public speculation.
