Kate Middleton Shines in Historic Moment

Kate Middleton shone at a state banquet for Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu held at Windsor Castle on March 18, 2026 — a sparkling diplomatic evening that highlighted the Princess of Wales’ return to public life more than a year after finishing cancer treatment.

At 44, Kate wore Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot tiara and an emerald-green gown by Andrew Gn, the color subtly honoring Nigeria’s flag. Prince William joined her as they supported King Charles and Queen Camilla in receiving the delegation during Nigeria’s first UK state visit in 37 years.

Her visible role at the dinner emphasized her comeback to royal responsibilities following a difficult 2024. In January that year she had planned abdominal surgery at The London Clinic in London; Kensington Palace initially said the operation was not cancer-related. Two months later, in a video that surprised many, Kate announced that tests after the surgery had detected cancer.

“In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous,” Kate said in her March 2024 announcement. “However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present.”

She received preventative chemotherapy for much of 2024 and made only a few public appearances, including Trooping the Colour in June and Wimbledon that summer. By September 2024 she had finished chemotherapy, and in January 2025 she announced her cancer was in remission.

Her return to full duties has been cautious but consistent. Kate now schedules engagements more carefully while prioritizing time with Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven. The children attend Lambrook School near the family’s Windsor residence.

The state banquet was an important moment for UK–Africa ties. President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu visited amid expanding commercial connections between the countries. In the lead-up, King Charles engaged with the UK–Nigeria cultural scene, including attending a London Fashion Week show by British Nigerian designer Tolu Coker and hosting a reception for the Nigerian community.

The day featured traditional royal ceremony. William and Kate met the Nigerian delegation at the Fairmont Windsor Park Hotel before accompanying them to the king and queen. A ceremonial carriage procession conveyed the group to Windsor Castle, where over 1,000 soldiers took part in the display.

Kate complemented the green Andrew Gn dress with the Queen Mother’s sapphire and diamond earrings from the Royal Collection and wore the blue sash of the King Charles Royal Family Order. The Lover’s Knot tiara, long associated with Princess Diana, has become one of Kate’s go-to pieces for state occasions; she has worn it more than a dozen times since 2015.

The visit also underscored the growing duties William and Kate are assuming as the king manages his own health issues. Charles was diagnosed with cancer in February 2024 soon after Kate’s surgery. Although the king has resumed public appearances, the prince and princess have stepped into more prominent roles at major national events.

This Nigerian banquet followed three major state banquets Kate attended in 2025, including one hosting President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump in September, where she wore a gold Phillipa Lepley gown with lace overlay. The September 2025 visit was notable as the first time a sitting US president received two state visits to the UK.

For Kate, the event marked another point in what she calls her “new normal.” She has been open about adapting to life after treatment. During a brewery tour with William earlier in March, Kate said she rarely drinks alcohol since her diagnosis. “It’s something I have to be a lot more conscious of now,” she said.

Much of her recovery has informed her charity work on early childhood development and mental health. Her “Mother Nature” video series, which wrapped up in January 2026, examined nature’s benefits for mental well-being — a subject closely tied to her own healing.

As Kate prepares for a future role as queen, observers note her increased public profile. She combines high-level diplomatic duties with school runs and sporting fixtures that keep her children’s routines. The era of powering through back-to-back events has given way to carefully selected engagements with space for family time.

The Nigerian state banquet showed that Kate has come through her health ordeal transformed rather than diminished — a prospective queen who faced a common, serious illness and handled it with the composure that has characterized her public life.
