Michael Reagan, the eldest son of President Ronald Reagan and a conservative commentator, has died at 80 years old following a battle with cancer.
The Reagan family announced his death on January 6, stating that Michael Reagan died on January 4 in Los Angeles, California, surrounded by family.
“Michael was and will always remain a beloved husband, father, and grandpa,” the family said in a statement. “Our hearts are deeply broken as we grieve the loss of a man who meant so much to all who knew and loved him.”
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute announced the death on the social platform X on January 6, describing Reagan as a steadfast guardian of his father’s legacy.
Fred Ryan, chairman of the foundation board, said Reagan lived a life shaped by conviction, purpose and devotion to President Reagan’s ideals. “Michael’s commitment to preserving and promoting his father’s legacy was unwavering,” Ryan said. Reagan was a contributor to the Newsmax television network and hosted The Michael Reagan Show radio program. He spent nearly two decades as a nationally syndicated radio talk show host, discussing politics and culture from a conservative perspective.
Reagan was born to Irene Flaugher on March 18, 1945. He was adopted hours after birth by Ronald Reagan and his then-wife, actress Jane Wyman. The adoption made him the eldest son of the future president, who would go on to serve two terms in the White House during the 1980s.
Reagan had three siblings from his father’s marriages. His sister Maureen Reagan, a political activist, died in 2001 at age 60. Another sister, Christine Reagan, died at or shortly after birth. From Ronald Reagan’s marriage to Nancy Reagan, he had two half-siblings: Patti Davis and Ron Reagan.
Following in his parents’ footsteps, Reagan pursued entertainment and media careers. He attended Arizona State University and Los Angeles Valley College before taking up acting. He appeared in television shows including Falcon Crest, though he eventually found his calling in conservative talk radio and political commentary.
Reagan authored several books throughout his life, including autobiographical works that detailed his experiences. He wrote “On the Outside Looking in” and “Twice Adopted,” in which he discussed his childhood, coming to terms with his adoption and his journey of faith. In 2016, he wrote “Lessons My Father Taught Me,” detailing lessons learned growing up as the son of Ronald Reagan.
Beyond media and writing, Reagan devoted considerable energy to charitable causes. He raised money for charities through powerboat racing, using the sport as a fundraising vehicle for organizations focused on health and social causes. His philanthropic work demonstrated a commitment to public service that extended beyond his political commentary.
Reagan maintained a decades-long marriage to his wife Colleen, with whom he had two children: Ashley Reagan and Cameron Reagan. The couple’s enduring relationship provided stability as Reagan navigated his public career and advocacy work.
Throughout his adult life, Reagan positioned himself as a defender and promoter of his father’s political legacy. President Ronald Reagan, who died in 2004 from Alzheimers, was known for conservative policies aimed at scaling back government and his focus on winning the Cold War. The elder Reagan’s presidency left an indelible mark on American politics, championing free-market economics, strong national defense and traditional values.
Michael Reagan worked to ensure his father’s political philosophy remained relevant to new generations of conservatives. Through his radio show, television appearances and public speaking engagements, he articulated the principles that defined his father’s time in office. His commentary often drew direct connections between contemporary political debates and the Reagan administration’s approach to governance.
The Young Americas Foundation, a conservative student organization, mourned Reagan’s passing and praised his contributions to the conservative movement. Young Americas Foundation released the family’s statement announcing his death, reflecting the close relationship Reagan maintained with organizations dedicated to conservative education and activism.
Reagan’s death marks the loss of a prominent voice in conservative media and a direct link to one of the most consequential presidencies of the 20th century. His work as a commentator, author and advocate helped shape how millions of Americans understood and interpreted his father’s political legacy.
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute continues to preserve and promote President Reagan’s legacy through educational programs, exhibitions and public events. Michael Reagan’s involvement with the foundation ensured that the institution maintained connections to the Reagan family while pursuing its mission of educating the public about the 40th president’s life and achievements.
As news of his death spread, tributes poured in from conservative leaders, media figures and political organizations. Many noted Reagan’s dedication to his father’s memory and his own contributions to political discourse over several decades. His distinctive voice in conservative media, combined with his unique perspective as President Reagan’s son, made him a sought-after commentator on political and cultural issues.
Reagan is survived by his wife Colleen, their children Ashley and Cameron, and their families. The Reagan family requested privacy during this difficult time while mourners and admirers remember Michael Reagan’s life and contributions to American conservatism.
