On Wednesday, January 7, 2026, a 37-year-old mother of three, Renee Nicole Good, was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Eyewitnesses reported that the tragic incident took place while Good was reversing her Honda Pilot away from federal agents. This event happened amidst the largest immigration enforcement operation in history, involving 2,000 agents in the Minneapolis area, which led to nationwide indignation and calls for the dissolution of federal immigration enforcement agencies.
This incident led to the quick denouncement by many recognized public figures, including Ken Jennings, the 51-year-old host of “Jeopardy!” Beginning on January 6, Jennings started posting statements on Bluesky, expressing his political views and reactions to the incident.
Jennings continued his posts on January 7, including reposting messages identifying the shooter as Jonathan Ross, as reported by the Star Tribune. He also commented on the handling of responses to his posts and maintained his stand despite receiving numerous opportunities to retreat.
When the incident occurred, Good was returning from her six-year-old son’s school drop-off. She and her partner ran into ICE agents during an immigration enforcement operation. Jonathan Ross, a 43-year-old Iraq War veteran identified by the Minnesota Star Tribune as the shooting officer, had been involved in a similar incident six months earlier. Ross fired three quick shots—separated by just 399 milliseconds—at Good, hitting her in the head and face as she tried to drive away, leading her Honda Pilot to crash into a parked car three seconds later.
A combination of video evidence shows Good’s SUV making a slight reverse before moving forward, away from the officers. The idea of Ross filming the encounter with his cellphone while holding his weapon raised questions among policing experts. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem stated that the agent was hit by the vehicle and received medical treatment, but she refrained from clarifying the sequence of events.
After viewing the video footage, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey dismissed the federal claims and asked ICE to leave Minneapolis. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) labeled the event an “act of domestic terrorism” and accused Good of utilizing her vehicle as a weapon. Vice President JD Vance supported this view, attributing Good’s death to her own actions and suggesting she was part of a larger left-wing network targeting ICE officers.
Good’s former husband denied her involvement in activism or protests. City Council member Jason Chavez described Good, a Colorado-born U.S. citizen, as an observer looking out for immigrant neighbors. Good, who graduated with an English degree from Old Dominion University in 2020, was the mother of three children, with her six-year-old son’s father passing away in 2023. Her wife shared that Good believed in the world’s kindness and recognized the essential truth taught by all religions.
According to Good’s wife, they had stopped to show their support for their neighbors when federal agents appeared with firearms. She is now left with the task of raising their son and continuing Good’s teachings of a better world in making.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz criticized the federal intervention and referred to the shooting as predictable and avoidable. He declared January 9, 2026, as “Renee Good Day”. President Donald Trump, however, labeled Good as an agitator who ran over the ICE officer.
The federal authorities restricted the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension’s access to evidence. This incident marked the ninth time ICE agents had used firearms on individuals since September 2025, with four other fatalities during federal deportation operations.
Protests erupted across the country, including Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC, El Paso, and Boston, with over 1,000 planned demonstrations by the “ICE out for good” national coalition. An online fundraiser for Good’s family ended after collecting more than $1.5 million in donations, which will be placed in a trust fund.
