FOX Host Left Humiliated by Democrat on Live TV

A recent interview on Fox News with host Will Cain instigated tension as he used language that the Democratic party have consistently viewed as a partisan insult. This prompted a swift correction from his interviewee, Rep. Maxwell Frost of Florida.

The confrontation occurred on Jan. 13 on “The Will Cain Show” after a segment about the fatal shooting of a Minneapolis, Minnesota mother by an ICE agent. Cain, 50, triggered the dispute when he introduced Frost, 29, using a term that the latter took exception to.

As Frost joined the broadcast, Cain introduced him as a “Democrat Florida congressman.”

Frost promptly corrected the host, asserting that the correct term is “Democratic” congressman, not “Democrat,” before proceeding with the interview.

Cain maintained his stance and repeated the mistake, clarifying that he defined Frost as a Democrat, not a Republican. He added that if he had not used “Democrat,” then he accepted the correction.

The dispute revolves around the use of “Democrat” as an adjective rather than its correct form “Democratic.” This minor yet significant language choice has long been seen as a slight against liberals.

William Safire traced the origin of this term to 1940 when Republican Harold Stassen argued that the Democratic Party was not truly democratic as it was controlled by influential city leaders such as Frank Hague of Jersey City and Tom Pendergast of Kansas City.

In 2006, New Yorker writer Hendrik Hertzberg noted that the term “Democrat Party” is commonly used in conservative talk radio. This phrase is a strategic linguistic choice by conservatives to remove the positive connotation of “democratic” from the party’s name.

Even Republicans have occasionally criticized this practice. George W. Bush apologized for using the term while he was president, and humorously admitted to his poor diction and tendency to occasionally mangle the English language.

Despite Frost’s correction, the disagreement over terminology was just one aspect of the tension during the over eight-minute debate between the two men. The intense discussion mainly revolved around the shooting of 37-year-old mother of three, Renee Nicole Good, by ICE agent Jonathan Ross in Minneapolis, Minnesota last week.

Frost labeled the shooting as a murder, stating that Good was denied due process and the ICE agent played the role of both jury and executioner. He criticized the Trump administration for swiftly labeling Good before the ongoing investigation into her killing is completed.

Throughout the segment, Cain and Frost talked over each other as they debated the shooting incident. Cain questioned Frost for calling the incident a murder despite Ross not yet being proven guilty.

Linguists observe that this type of language manipulation serves several purposes in political communication. By removing “democratic” from the party’s official name, speakers subtly imply the party is undemocratic. This strategy is a type of rhetorical device known as dysphemisms—negative expressions used instead of neutral or positive ones.

This practice has endured despite objections from Democratic lawmakers and party officials for decades.

The debate between Cain and Frost comes amidst escalating political tensions over immigration enforcement. The shooting of Good in Minneapolis, Minnesota has triggered debates over ICE operations and federal law enforcement tactics.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has commented on the situation in Minnesota, while Cain brought up varied legal interpretations regarding the constitutionality of federal immigration enforcement actions in the state.

As one of the youngest members of Congress, Frost represents Florida and has been a vocal advocate on progressive issues since taking office. He often appears on news programs to discuss policy matters.

Frost’s readiness to correct Cain on-air reflects a broader strategy among some Democrats to counter what they perceive as deliberate linguistic provocations. Younger Democratic lawmakers increasingly choose to directly address such formulations, even if it leads to awkward moments during live broadcasts.

This incident underscores the challenges of political discourse in an era of extreme partisanship. What once may have been brushed aside as a minor grammatical dispute has evolved into a signifier of political identity and respect. The fact that both Cain and Frost felt compelled to address the terminology issue before discussing substantive policy shows how linguistic choices are intertwined with political messaging.

For Democrats, insisting on using ‘Democratic’ rather than ‘Democrat’ as an adjective is an effort to control their own branding and resist what they see as deliberate distortions by political adversaries. For Republicans who use the term Democrat Party, this formulation has become so prevalent in conservative media that many may not even be aware of its origins as an intentional slight.

While the disagreement between Cain and Frost is unlikely to settle the long-standing debate over this terminology, it serves as a reminder that even seemingly minor linguistic choices in political communication can hold significant meaning and invoke strong reactions from those targeted.
