Kianna Underwood, known for her early work as a Nickelodeon child actor, died in a hit-and-run incident in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York on January 16, 2026. She was 33.
The fatal accident happened around 6:43 a.m. at the juncture of Pitkin Avenue and Mother Gaston Boulevard. Authorities were alerted to the incident through a 9-1-1 call and discovered Underwood had been hit by more than one vehicle.
The New York Police Department reported that a black 2021 Ford Explorer SUV was driving west on Pitkin Avenue. The driver crossed the double yellow line, going against traffic to overtake another vehicle, and hit Underwood in the crosswalk.
After the first collision, Underwood was struck again by a black and gray sedan while lying on the road. She was declared dead at the scene. The two drivers did not stop and are still at large. The NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Squad from the 73rd Precinct continues to investigate.
Surveillance footage obtained during the investigation shows the aftermath of the accident. Underwood’s body was discovered at Pitkin Avenue and Osborn Street, two blocks from where she was initially hit.
At the time of her death, Underwood was homeless, according to police.
Underwood started her entertainment career as a child, providing the voice for Fuschia Glover on the Nick Jr. show “Little Bill” from 1999 to 2004. She played the character in 23 episodes of the animated series.
In 2005, she appeared in seven episodes of “All That,” a popular children’s sketch comedy show on Nickelodeon, alongside stars like Kenan Thompson, Nick Cannon, and Amanda Bynes. “All That” was her last television or film role.
Besides her TV work, Underwood also showcased her skills on stage during a national tour of “Hairspray,” playing Little Inez. She was also cast in the film “The 24 Hour Woman.”
In 2023, Angelique Bates, an original cast member of “All That,” expressed concern about Underwood’s situation on Instagram. “Everything that’s happening right now, I pretty much predicted,” Bates stated. “I said, are people going to wait ’til it’s too late? That she’s gone or she’s in jail?”
Bates hoped that Underwood would be remembered for her talent and humor, and not her struggles. “As much as she loved her supporters, as much as she loved the franchise, I think she would have loved to know that that love was reciprocated,” she said.
The tragic incident brings to light the ongoing issues of pedestrian safety in New York City, especially in busy areas. Hit-and-run accidents, where drivers flee without providing aid or information, can lead to severe legal penalties in New York, including substantial prison time.
The Brownsville neighborhood in eastern Brooklyn, where the accident occurred, has faced several safety challenges over the years. Pitkin Avenue, a major commercial route, sees significant vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Crosswalk safety remains a pressing issue in such urban areas, as pedestrians have the right of way under New York traffic law.
The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad is tasked with probing serious traffic accidents, especially those involving fatalities or severe injuries. The unit uses various methods, including surveillance video analysis, witness interviews, vehicle forensics, and accident reconstruction to determine the cause of incidents and identify the responsible parties.
Investigators often rely on surveillance footage, witness statements, and analysis of vehicle parts in hit-and-run cases. Public tips also play a vital role in solving these cases.
The entertainment industry has seen many former child actors face difficulties transitioning to adulthood, including mental health issues and homelessness. Various organizations and advocacy groups have sought to provide support for former child performers, but gaps in assistance remain.
Underwood’s death is part of a broader pattern of pedestrian fatalities in New York City, where traffic safety continues to be a concern. Despite measures like reduced speed limits, increased enforcement, redesigned intersections, and expanded bike lanes, pedestrian deaths persist.
The investigation into Underwood’s death is ongoing as authorities strive to identify and locate the drivers involved in the fatal hit-and-run. The New York Police Department has urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
Underwood’s untimely passing is a loss not only for her close ones but also to the community of former child actors and fans who appreciated her performances on Nickelodeon programs that entertained a generation in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
