On Monday, Dec. 1, 2025, Buckingham Palace announced additional sanctions, formally canceling Andrew’s membership in the Order of the Garter. According to a statement published in the Gazette, Britain’s official public record, the action carried extraordinary language: “THE KING has directed that the appointment of Andrew Albert Christian Edward MOUNTBATTEN-WINDSOR to be a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, dated 23 April 2006, shall be cancelled and annulled and that his name shall be erased from the Register of the said Order.”
Andrew’s Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order was also annulled the same day. The Order of the Garter represents one of the highest honors in British chivalry, established in medieval times and limited to senior members of the royal family and distinguished individuals personally chosen by the sovereign. Its removal signals a complete severing of Andrew’s ceremonial ties to the monarchy.
The palace’s initial October statement established the scope of the sanctions: “His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew. His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence. Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease and he will move to alternative private accommodation.”
The removal encompasses the Duke of York title Andrew held since birth as the son of Queen Elizabeth II. He will no longer be known as prince, Duke of York, or His Royal Highness. Andrew will be known simply as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, representing an unprecedented stripping of titles for a modern British royal.
The palace acknowledged the severity of its actions while expressing support for abuse survivors: “These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him.
