Three Killed, Four Injured in Fiery Highway Collision

Three individuals lost their lives, and four others were injured following a fiery collision involving eight vehicles on Interstate 10 in Southern California on Tuesday, October 21, 2025. The incident caused traffic to halt for several hours and prompted a significant emergency response.

The serious accident took place around 1:10 p.m. The California Highway Patrol reported that a semi-truck driver failed to stop as traffic ahead slowed, triggering a chain-reaction crash involving four semi-trucks and four passenger vehicles.

Eyewitness Jason Calmelat recounted the event to KTLA, expressing his immediate thought that someone had just died. Calmelat observed the red truck speeding while others had stopped. The truck driver did not apply the brakes or slow down; instead, they collided forcefully with another truck and crushed two cars.

According to Calmelat, one passenger vehicle ignited upon impact, producing a large fireball that rose into the sky. KTLA footage displayed the extensive damage, including one vehicle so severely burned and twisted that its make or model was unidentifiable by investigators.

Medical teams declared three people deceased at the scene. Four additional individuals were taken to local hospitals, but the California Highway Patrol has not disclosed the severity of their injuries or their current conditions. The identities of the victims and details of their vehicles remain undisclosed.

The collision led authorities to close all westbound lanes of the Interstate except for two FasTrak lanes. Transition roads from Interstate 15 to Interstate 10 westbound were also closed as investigators documented the scene and removed debris.

The lanes stayed closed until about 1 a.m. the following day, when crews reopened the highway. The extended closure caused significant delays for commuters and commercial vehicles on this busy Southern California route.

The California Highway Patrol has initiated an investigation into the crash, focusing on the semi-truck driver’s failure to stop. The driver, a 21-year-old from Yuba City, California, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. The CHP will determine if any citations will be issued based on the investigation’s findings.

The incident happened near the Interstate 15 interchange, a frequently congested area where traffic often slows in the afternoon. The collision, involving both commercial and passenger vehicles, complicated the crash site and the ensuing investigation.

Emergency crews faced difficult conditions, working to rescue victims from the wreckage while controlling the fire that consumed at least one vehicle. The heavy smoke and intense flames reduced visibility, complicating rescue operations.

This crash highlights ongoing concerns about safety on California’s interstates, particularly during peak traffic, involving both commercial trucks and passenger vehicles. The mix of large trucks, slowing traffic, and driver inattention poses risks on busy highways.
