Legendary Drummer Dead at 68

Veteran rock drummer Thommy Price, known for his long association with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, passed away on Friday, October 10, at the age of 68. His wife, Stefunny Price, shared the news of his passing on Facebook, describing him as a dedicated husband, proud father, and influential drummer with a career spanning decades.

Price, originally from Brooklyn, New York, joined Joan Jett and the Blackhearts in 1986, succeeding original drummer Lee Crystal. His time with the band spanned until 2016, during which he contributed to eight studio albums, including the 1988 hit “I Hate Myself for Loving You.”

The band paid homage to their longtime drummer on social media, calling Price a legendary drummer and a Blackheart for 4 decades. They highlighted his status as a drummer’s drummer, respected by industry peers, and conveyed their condolences to his family.

Prior to his extended stint with Jett’s band, Price was recognized as an in-demand musician through his work with various renowned rock groups. Between 1982 and 1984, he played drums for Scandal, led by singer Patty Smyth, where he participated in their major hit, “The Warrior,” which reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1984.

After his period with Scandal, Price joined Billy Idol’s backing band in the mid-1980s, contributing to the successful 1983 album “Rebel Yell,” including the title track. Idol fondly remembered Price, stating that he “came in at the last minute and put his definitive stamp on my Rebel Yell album.”

The “Eyes Without a Face” artist described Price as a friend and musical ally who brought significant talent and heart to his work. Idol noted that Price’s contributions were crucial in completing the album and that he toured with the band during the Rebel Yell and Whiplash Smile tours.

Throughout his career, Price was a prolific session musician, collaborating with many notable artists across various genres. His collaborations included work with Roger Daltrey of The Who, The Psychedelic Furs, Blue Öyster Cult, Debbie Harry of Blondie, Ronnie Spector, Mink DeVille, The Waterboys, and Marshall Crenshaw.

One of Price’s final recorded performances was on former Blackhearts guitarist Ricky Byrd’s 2025 solo album “NYC Made,” playing on the track “RnR’s Demise (Has Been Greatly Exaggerated).” Byrd praised Price, calling him solid as a rock and among the best drummers, noting audiences felt his kick drum’s impact during live shows.

Aside from his musical talents, those who knew Price remembered him for his personal attributes. His wife’s announcement highlighted his energy, kindness, and humor, and stated that these traits left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered and every stage he performed on.

Byrd also reminisced about Price’s personality, describing him as having a Bowery Boys sense of humor and being a sweetheart most of the time. The guitarist expressed satisfaction and pride at having Price feature on his recent album, considering it a final collaboration between former bandmates.

Price’s extensive career established him as one of rock’s most respected drummers, with work spanning four decades in the music industry. His contributions to iconic rock albums and consistent touring presence made him a valued member of the rock community.

Price is survived by his wife, Stefunny, and daughter, Brooklyn, along with what his wife described as a large, beautiful Italian family. The family stated that details regarding a celebration of Price’s life would be shared soon.

No information about the cause of death has been disclosed. His wife’s announcement concluded by noting that his music and spirit would continue to resonate in every beat, every song, and every heart he touched throughout his extensive career in rock music.
