Trump Lashes Out Over Major Award Snub

President Donald Trump issued a statement on Truth Social on Friday evening, June 20, 2025, highlighting various international conflicts he asserts were resolved under his administration. He expressed discontent about not being recognized with a Nobel Peace Prize for these efforts.

The statement followed news from Pakistan announcing its intention to nominate Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The nomination cites Trump’s role in mediating tensions between India and Pakistan. Earlier that day, Trump remarked to reporters in Morristown, New Jersey, “The people know, and that’s all that matters to me!”

In his social media post, Trump detailed peace negotiations led by his administration. He referred to a preliminary agreement reached on Thursday, June 19, between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda aimed at ending their protracted conflict in eastern Congo. The formal signing took place in Washington, D.C., on Friday, June 27, 2025, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio in attendance.

Trump claimed involvement in the Congo-Rwanda accord, alongside Rubio, describing it as a solution to a longstanding and violent conflict. The Trump administration was invited by the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, to mediate between the government and rebels allegedly supported by Rwanda.

Trump also mentioned his administration’s role in defusing the recent India-Pakistan crisis. A statement from Pakistan praised Trump’s diplomatic intervention during a period of heightened tensions in the region, noting that it helped de-escalate a situation that resulted in numerous casualties.

According to Pakistan, Trump’s actions led to a ceasefire and prevented broader conflict between the nuclear-armed states. However, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi disputed Trump’s involvement, with Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stating that the ceasefire was the result of direct negotiations between India and Pakistan, independent of U.S. involvement.

Trump expressed frustration over not receiving a Nobel Prize for resolving conflicts between Serbia and Kosovo, maintaining peace between Egypt and Ethiopia, or for the Abraham Accords in the Middle East. He criticized the construction of a large Ethiopian dam, which he claimed reduces the Nile River’s water flow and was financed by the United States.

He suggested that the Abraham Accords might expand further, potentially unifying the Middle East. He also mentioned potential future involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

This is not the first time Trump has sought Nobel recognition. He has received nominations in the past, including one from New York Republican Representative Claudia Tenney in 2023 for his efforts in the Middle East, and another from Norwegian politician Christian Tybring-Gjedde in 2020 for his attempts to reconcile North and South Korea. Swedish lawmakers have also nominated him for deals between Serbia and Kosovo, as well as the Abraham Accords.

Former U.S. presidents who have received the Nobel Peace Prize include Theodore Roosevelt in 1906, Woodrow Wilson in 1920, Jimmy Carter in 2002, and Barack Obama in 2009. Former Vice President Al Gore was awarded the prize in 2007 for climate change advocacy.

Trump has frequently contrasted his lack of Nobel recognition with Obama’s 2009 award, which was granted for his efforts to enhance international diplomacy and cooperation. At a 2020 rally, Trump mocked Obama’s reaction to the award, and in 2013, tweeted that Obama’s prize should be rescinded.

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded annually to those who have contributed significantly to fraternity between nations, the reduction of standing armies, and the promotion of peace congresses. The winner for 2025 will be announced in October. The Nobel committee keeps nominees confidential for 50 years.

California Republican Representative Darrell Issa indicated in March 2025 that he plans to nominate Trump for the prize. A former senior White House official from Trump’s first term told NBC that Trump remains fixated on the fact that Obama received the award while he did not.
