Tourist Killed in Boat Propeller Tragedy

A dance instructor, aged 33, lost her life after being hit by a boat propeller during a collision on Lake Como in Italy on July 12, 2025. Julina de Lannoy, originally from Aruba, was on a boat trip with six friends when the incident took place around 4:00 PM.

The group was on a rented boat, moving at a relaxed pace, when they were struck head-on by another vessel operated by a 44-year-old local man. The collision threw de Lannoy into the water, resulting in severe leg injuries from one of the boat’s propellers.

Emergency personnel responded quickly, bringing de Lannoy to a nearby dock for resuscitation efforts before paramedics took over. She was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, but medical staff could not save her. The operator of the other boat was also hospitalized, underwent a breathalyzer test, and remained under observation as of July 13.

Police have seized both boats and are investigating the cause of the collision, including the possibility of a maneuvering error. Authorities aim to clarify the circumstances that led to the accident on the busy Italian lake.

Residents have voiced concerns over increased boat traffic on Lake Como this summer, describing it as the busiest season yet. The lake, located in the Lombardy region, attracts approximately 1.4 million visitors annually, raising concerns about the potential for boating accidents.

De Lannoy had been residing in Brussels, Belgium, where she held a senior role at a department store. She began her career as a dance instructor in 2020, initially offering twerk classes in Luxembourg before expanding her services across Europe.

In 2022, she founded Caribbean Twerk Brussels, establishing herself as a notable figure in the European dance community. Her classes and performances gained traction in Belgium and Amsterdam, earning her a substantial following through her energetic teaching and regular performances.

Before moving to Europe, de Lannoy worked in Aruba for the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, an organization focused on leadership development for young women aged 11 to 20. Her work there reflected her dedication to mentoring and supporting youth in her community.

A spokesperson for the organization highlighted de Lannoy’s influence, stating, “her joy was contagious, and her presence was a gift.” The spokesperson emphasized that she embodied values of love, service, and sisterhood in her work.

De Lannoy is survived by her mother, Lisa, and her sister, Kiana. Friends who witnessed the incident confirmed that their boat was moving slowly at the time of the collision, countering any claims of reckless operation.

The accident highlights ongoing safety concerns regarding recreational boating at popular tourist destinations, such as Lake Como. Increased boat traffic during peak summer months has created challenging conditions for operators navigating the busy waters.

Italian authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Both vessels remain impounded as officials work to determine the cause and whether any charges will be filed against the operator of the second boat.

The European dance community has mourned de Lannoy’s passing, recognizing her as a respected instructor and performer. Her contributions to Caribbean dance culture were acknowledged across multiple countries, marking her death as a significant loss to the artistic community she served.
