Basketball Star Killed in ATV Wreck

Cameron Woodall, a 26-year-old former college basketball standout who helped lead Raymond High School to back-to-back state championships, died June 7 in an ATV accident in Raymond, Mississippi. The accident occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Midway Road when Woodall lost control of his four-wheeler and collided with another ATV rider.

Interim Hinds County Coroner Jeremiah Howard confirmed that Woodall died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. According to family members, a tire blew out on Woodall’s ATV, causing him to lose control and overturn. The second rider was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Multiple emergency response agencies responded to the scene, including AMR ambulance service, the Byram Volunteer Fire Department, the Raymond Volunteer Fire Department, and the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office is leading the ongoing investigation into the accident.

Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones expressed condolences to the community, stating that his heart goes out to the family, friends, and the Raymond basketball community affected by the loss. The 6-foot-6 forward had established himself as a prominent figure in Mississippi basketball circles throughout his high school and college career.

Woodall starred at Raymond High School where he helped secure MHSAA Class 4A state championships in both 2017 and 2018. His high school success laid the foundation for a collegiate career that would span multiple institutions and showcase his versatility as a player.

Following his high school achievements, Woodall continued his basketball journey at Copiah-Lincoln Community College before transferring to Grambling State University. He completed his collegiate career at Tougaloo College during the 2022-23 season, where he made a significant impact both on and off the court.

During his time at Tougaloo College, Woodall averaged 18 points and seven rebounds per game in the 2021-22 season. His consistent performance earned him Second Team All-Gulf Coast Athletic Conference honors twice, according to his social media profiles. The recognition highlighted his ability to compete at a high level throughout his college tenure.

Woodall’s basketball aspirations extended beyond college, as he pursued professional opportunities overseas. He played professionally in Peru, demonstrating his commitment to continuing his basketball career at the highest levels possible. His international experience reflected his dedication to the sport that had defined much of his life.

Tougaloo College athletics department issued a statement on Instagram honoring their former player. The statement described Woodall as being competitive on the court, but maintaining a kind-hearted spirit off it. The college emphasized that his impact extended far beyond basketball.

The athletics department characterized Woodall as a friend, brother, and true representative of the college’s values. Known to many as “Big Cam,” Woodall had developed strong relationships throughout the basketball community.

Copiah-Lincoln Community College also honored Woodall with a social media tribute, extending heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and former teammates. The recognition from multiple institutions demonstrated the widespread respect he had earned throughout his basketball career.

During his high school years, Woodall had expressed aspirations of reaching the NBA, with plans to use potential earnings to give back to his community. He envisioned building gymnasiums and providing opportunities for young people to showcase their talents while helping reduce street violence and poverty in his area.

Woodall’s mother, Camelia Bracey, described her son as someone who never treated his younger brother Jaylin poorly despite their size difference. Family members and coaches consistently praised his character and the positive influence he had on others around him. His high school coach, Tony Tadlock, reflected on their relationship and the mutual impact they had on each other.

Due to the tragedy and planned memorial services, a Tougaloo men’s basketball identification camp originally scheduled for Saturday at the Jackson Street Gym in Vicksburg has been postponed indefinitely. No makeup date has been announced for the camp.
