Henderson State University basketball player Jamarion Brown, 23, died after being shot in the head at a pool party in East Camp County, Texas, during the early hours of May 24, 2025. A 17-year-old suspect has been arrested and charged with murder in relation to the fatal incident.
Authorities responded to several reports of a shooting at the pool party on Friday, May 23, and discovered Brown critically injured from a gunshot to the head. The Camp County Sheriff’s Office noted that a helicopter arrived on site, but Brown’s condition was too severe for immediate air transport. He was initially taken to a local hospital before being flown to a Tyler, Texas, hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Onterrian Jamour Newton, 17, from Mount Pleasant, Texas, was apprehended on May 28 and charged with murder. Newton is currently held in the Camp County Jail without bond. The sheriff’s office indicated that further charges might be filed regarding two other individuals injured during the shooting.
Two additional victims sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. One was shot in the leg, and another was hit in the hip. Camp County Sheriff John Cortelyou mentioned that charges related to these injuries are pending against Newton.
Brown, also a resident of Mount Pleasant, Texas, was a junior guard for the Henderson State Reddies. He transferred to the Division II school in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, from Southwestern Christian College and had completed one season with the team. During the 2024-25 season, Brown averaged 6.5 points and 3.6 rebounds over 23.6 minutes per game.
Henderson State University released statements mourning Brown’s death. The athletics department noted that while Brown spent only one season in Arkadelphia, he left a significant impact on campus. University officials described his warmth and welcoming personality, making him a recognizable and respected figure among his peers, faculty, and staff.
On the basketball court, university officials characterized Brown as a fierce competitor and a valued teammate, integral to the 2024-25 men’s basketball team. They highlighted his toughness, work ethic, and team spirit, stating he embodied the Reddie Spirit and brought honor to himself and Henderson State.
Henderson State men’s basketball coach Jimmy Elgas expressed the team’s sorrow over the loss. Elgas stated, “His loss leaves a tremendous void on our campus.” He emphasized that Brown’s influence extended beyond the basketball court, permeating the entire Henderson State University community.
According to Brown’s obituary, he is survived by his fiancée, Sydni Parrish, as well as his parents and 10 siblings. The obituary described Brown as a positive force, known for his warm nature, devotion to his family, and passion for basketball. It highlighted his kindness, determination, and commitment, all of which were evident in every aspect of his life.
The obituary emphasized that basketball was one of Brown’s greatest passions, played with dedication and joy. It noted that family was central to his life and strength. Henderson State posted a memorial on social media featuring Brown’s photo, honoring his legacy and acknowledging him as a forever Reddie. The university described Brown as leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and determination.
The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting incident. The case is ongoing, with potential additional charges pending as legal proceedings against Newton continue.
