Trump Torched Over $45M Birthday Blowout

Washington, D.C., will see a significant military parade this summer, featuring up to 25 tanks, as part of a dual celebration for President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday and the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary. The event, set for June 14, 2025, is expected to cost between $25 million and $45 million.

The celebration expands the Army’s planned anniversary events, including a parade to honor the president’s birthday. Officials, who remained anonymous, told Reuters that adding the parade increased the cost by several million dollars beyond the original Army celebrations.

Sources revealed that about two dozen M1 Abrams tanks weighing over 120,000 pounds will be part of the display. These tanks will be joined by more than 6,500 troops, approximately 150 vehicles, and 50 aircraft, forming a substantial military presence in the capital.

The estimated costs provided by officials do not include additional expenses for Washington, D.C., such as road repairs due to tank damage or post-event cleanup. Local authorities have not publicly addressed the potential impact on city infrastructure and services.

Large-scale military parades are rare in U.S. history, typically reserved for significant victories or events. The last major tank parade in Washington occurred in 1991 after the Gulf War, celebrating the removal of Iraqi forces from Kuwait.

This is not President Trump’s first attempt at organizing a military parade. During his first term, he directed the Pentagon to explore options after witnessing France’s Bastille Day parade in 2017. Those early plans were estimated to cost around $90 million before being reduced.

Trump eventually opted for a smaller display during the 2019 Independence Day celebrations, featuring static armored vehicle displays at the Lincoln Memorial and military aircraft flyovers.

The Army’s 250th anniversary is a notable milestone, tracing its origins to June 14, 1775, when the Continental Congress established the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Such anniversaries are typically marked by ceremonies across the U.S. and at military bases worldwide.

The dual celebration has been criticized, with some opponents viewing it as excessive despite federal cost-cutting measures. Senator Mark Warner of Virginia criticized the expenditure as “fiscally irresponsible” and questioned the appropriateness of combining a presidential birthday with a military anniversary.

On May 13, Warner stated that while the Army’s history should be honored, spending tens of millions of taxpayer dollars on a parade seems inconsistent with budget constraints in other areas.

Former White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany supported the plans, emphasizing the event’s role in honoring both the president and the Army’s 250 years of sacrifices. She noted the opportunity to celebrate two significant American institutions together.

Planning for the event continues, with details about the parade route, public access, and security measures expected soon. The National Park Service and D.C. Metropolitan Police Department are working with military officials on logistics and crowd management for the anticipated large-scale event.
