Popular Pastor Found Murdered

A 76-year-old pastor from Arizona was found deceased in his residence, creating concern in the close-knit New River community.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) discovered Pastor William “Bill” Schonemann’s body in his New River, Arizona, home on April 28, 2025, after responding to a 911 call. Investigators noted that his body was positioned in a concerning manner, with his arms extended on his bed and hands secured to the wall, indicating severe injuries.

The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office classified Schonemann’s death as a homicide, but details regarding the cause of death, suspects, or motives have not been released.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Deputy Will Jinks commented, “Based on observations at the scene, it appeared there may have been foul play. MCSO is actively working the case. There are specific and unique circumstances to this case that we are not at liberty to discuss to ensure we keep the integrity of the investigation.”

Despite assurances from law enforcement that there is no ongoing threat to the community, residents remain on edge due to the violent nature of the incident.

Neighbor Mike Anders expressed his apprehension, noting that he and other residents had started locking their doors, which was not common in the area. Anders speculated that the perpetrator may be known to the pastor.

Resident Emily Brean expressed her shock at the occurrence of such a violent act in New River, Arizona. She described the community as small and secure, where residents often leave keys in vehicles and doors unlocked. Brean wondered why a religious leader would be targeted.

Schonemann had led the New River Bible Chapel for about 25 years and was well-regarded in the community. He was known for his religious leadership and enthusiasm for vehicles, including cars, trucks, and planes.

Schonemann’s wife passed away in 2022. They had been married for nearly 49 years. After her death, he devoted more time to his church, which deepened his connection with the community, as his son, Randall Schonemann, shared. According to Randall’s wife, Crystal Schonemann, he was very sociable and always eager to converse with others.

The pastor was also active in the Red Devil’s Hot Rod Club, where he applied his skills in building and repairing classic cars and motorcycles. His club members recall his technical abilities and compassionate nature.

Randall defended his father’s character, stating that the pastor had no conflicts with others and had positively influenced many people throughout his life.

Public records show Schonemann was a Navy veteran who served in Vietnam before his decades of spiritual service to the New River community.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation and has called upon anyone with information about Schonemann’s death to contact them.

While authorities believe this is an isolated case with no ongoing public threat, the absence of a suspect or clear motive concerns residents.

Despite its proximity to urban amenities, residents are drawn to New River for its spacious lots and rural lifestyle opportunities. The community offers a blend of desert beauty and accessibility to Phoenix, making it a unique part of Arizona’s landscape.
