Denise Alexander, known for her long-running role as Dr. Lesley Webber on “General Hospital,” passed away at age 85 on March 5, as announced by the show’s executive producer. Her death, attributed to natural causes, was disclosed only recently.
Frank Valentini shared the news on Saturday through Instagram, paying tribute to Alexander’s influential career and significant contribution to daytime television.
Alexander’s acting career began in the early 1950s with her Broadway debut in “The Children’s Hour.” She appeared on classic TV programs like “Father Knows Best,” “The Twilight Zone,” and “The Danny Kaye Show.” Her career path shifted in 1960 when she joined the CBS soap opera “The Clear Horizon.”
Her career in soap operas began before “General Hospital” with her role as Susan Hunter Martin on “Days of Our Lives” from 1966 to 1973, establishing her as a notable figure in daytime drama.
She gained lasting recognition with her portrayal of Dr. Lesley Williams (later Webber) on “General Hospital,” a role that influenced the depiction of women in medicine on television. Her last appearance on the ABC soap opera was in 2021, concluding a nearly six-decade career.
Susan Seaforth Hayes, known for her role as Julie Williams on “Days of Our Lives,” paid tribute to Alexander on social media, highlighting their long friendship.
“Denise Alexander was a friend to treasure and an actress to applaud,” Hayes wrote with a photo of herself, her husband Billy Hayes, and Alexander. “She was well established on Days when I joined the cast as Julie #4 (a replacement for four previous actresses). She watched Billy and I fall madly in love and, being a romantic lady herself, cheered us on.”
Hayes reflected on their common experiences, including starting as child actors, being influenced by strong mothers, and their early years as Christian Scientists. She expressed appreciation for Alexander’s wisdom and kindness, affirming her enduring love for her friend.
Alexander’s death resonated within the soap opera community, with fans sharing memories and condolences online. Many emphasized her character’s strong female representation when women professionals were striving for recognition.
Throughout her time on “General Hospital,” Alexander’s character was involved in numerous significant storylines, including the notable Laura and Luke plot, where she played Laura’s mother. Dr. Lesley Webber became a central figure, with Alexander adding depth to the evolving role.
Born in New York City, Alexander started as a child actress before transitioning to adult television roles. While soap operas were her primary focus, she also appeared in primetime TV throughout her career.
