Rock Legend Collapses, Rushed to Hospital

Renowned guitarist Carlos Santana, aged 77, was taken to a hospital in San Antonio, Texas, on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, following a medical situation that occurred while preparing for an upcoming concert. The incident took place at the Majestic Theater during a soundcheck, where Santana experienced a medical emergency later identified as dehydration.

Michael Vrionis, Santana’s manager, issued a statement about the postponement of the concert in San Antonio: “It is with profound disappointment that I have to inform you all that tonight’s show in San Antonio has been postponed. Mr. Santana was at the venue preparing for tonight’s show when he experienced an event that was determined to be dehydration.”

The postponement of the concert was deemed “the most prudent course of action” given Santana’s health condition. Attendees at the venue reported seeing the musician being placed on a stretcher and transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

Vrionis assured fans that Santana is recovering well and is eager to reschedule the San Antonio show and carry on with his U.S. tour. An announcement regarding a new date for the postponed concert is anticipated soon.

This incident adds to a series of health-related disruptions that have affected Santana’s performance itinerary in recent years. In January 2025, the guitarist had to delay multiple dates of his Las Vegas residency at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay after sustaining a “hard fall” at his home in Hawaii, which led to a broken finger on his left hand.

In July 2022, Santana faced a similar dehydration issue when he collapsed on stage at the Pine Knob Music Festival in Clarkson, Michigan. This occurred during his Miraculous Supernatural Tour with Earth, Wind, and Fire. His representative later confirmed that Santana suffered from heat exhaustion and dehydration during the incident, which was exacerbated by food poisoning.

Santana’s medical history includes a heart procedure in December 2021, which required him to cancel several Las Vegas performances. At that time, Santana shared in a video message that he had experienced chest discomfort and sought medical assistance. Following the doctor’s advice, he took a break to focus on recovery, canceling seven shows to regain full strength.

Despite these health challenges, Santana continues to maintain an active tour schedule as part of his Oneness Tour 2025. The guitarist, who will turn 78 in July, has recently reflected on life and mortality following the deaths of fellow musicians Jeff Beck and Burt Bacharach, which have fueled his determination to keep performing.

Santana gained fame in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band Santana, known for blending rock with Latin American jazz. His style features blues-based guitar lines, combined with Latin American and African percussion instruments such as timbales and congas.

After his initial success, Santana experienced a career resurgence in the late 1990s, achieving renewed popularity and critical acclaim. He has remained a significant figure in the music industry, continuing to tour extensively despite occasional health-related postponements.

Following this recent incident, Santana’s management has confirmed that he is expected to resume his tour schedule upon full recovery. Ticket holders for the postponed San Antonio show are advised to retain their tickets, which will be honored for the rescheduled date once announced.

The current U.S. leg of Santana’s tour is set to continue through spring before he travels to Europe for a series of summer performances.
