Shannon Elizabeth, recognized for her role as Nadia in the 1999 film “American Pie,” shifted from Hollywood to focus on wildlife conservation efforts in South Africa nearly a decade ago.
In 2016, Elizabeth moved to Cape Town, South Africa, to dedicate herself to her nonprofit organization, The Shannon Elizabeth Foundation. According to Fox News, she initially founded “Animal Avengers” in 2001 to rescue cats and dogs in Los Angeles, California. Over the years, its mission expanded to include broader wildlife conservation initiatives, with a specific focus on endangered species in Africa.
The foundation is currently concentrating on rhino conservation, with plans to create a sanctuary in South Africa. Elizabeth and her team have been caring for a blind male black rhino named Munu, who, being critically endangered, needs special care due to his vulnerability. The organization aims to extend its sanctuary to accommodate additional rhinos, providing a safe environment for these animals.
Despite her shift in focus, Elizabeth, 51, has not completely left her acting career behind. She continues to participate in select acting projects while prioritizing her conservation work. Her recent film appearances include “Scary Movie,” “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back,” “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot,” “Plan B,” and “A Home for the Holidays,” along with Hallmark Channel Christmas films.
Elizabeth is also involved in producing a documentary about Munu, the blind black rhino under her foundation’s care. The documentary seeks to increase awareness about the challenges facing black rhinos, which are critically endangered due to poaching and habitat destruction.
Elizabeth joins a group of celebrities who have transitioned from Hollywood to different fields. E!
