NBC Star Opens Up About Taylor Swift Rejection

NBC’s Willie Geist has shared his ongoing efforts to land an interview with pop icon Taylor Swift for his “Sunday Today” program, despite multiple refusals from her representatives. In a discussion with Us Weekly published on April 19, Geist, 49, outlined his plans and disclosed his list of dream interviews with celebrities.

Swift, 35, remains a top priority for Geist, despite her reputation for a selective approach to media engagements. “Taylor Swift’s always on the list,” Geist mentioned to Us Weekly. “She doesn’t do a lot of interviews. She has great people around her who are very nice and very polite when they decline, and I appreciate that. But I’ll keep asking.”

Geist has previously expressed his wish to interview the “Shake It Off” artist. In January this year, he voiced similar hopes to Parade magazine, noting that Swift has not yet agreed to an interview but he remains optimistic she will eventually join his show, emphasizing that “the invite remains open.”

During his nine-year term as host of “Sunday Today,” Geist has conducted over 530 interviews with various celebrities and newsmakers. Despite his extensive career, Swift has not yet been featured on his Sunday program, although she has appeared on the main “Today” show on several occasions, most recently in 2019.

Swift’s limited engagement with the media has become a significant element of her public image recently. Her most notable interview in recent times was with Time magazine when she was named Person of the Year in 2023, marking the first time an entertainer received this solo honor in 96 years.

While Swift tops his list, Geist also expressed interest in interviewing other prominent personalities. He mentioned Jay-Z as another desired guest, indicating a wish to explore the musician’s career and cultural influence. Additionally, Geist noted actor Timothée Chalamet as a potential interview subject.

Geist’s aspirations for interviews align with his approach on “Sunday Today,” where he seeks to engage in meaningful discussions with influential figures from entertainment, politics, and culture. His persistence in pursuing Swift stems from a professional admiration for her impact rather than mere celebrity interest.

As he continues his pursuit of an interview with Swift, Geist is preparing for an upcoming “Sunday Sitdown Live” event featuring chef and television personality Ina Garten. During his conversation with Us Weekly, Geist commented on Garten’s loyal fan base, which he suggested rivals the fervor of Swift’s followers, known as “Swifties.”

Geist balances his professional ambitions with his personal life, spending time with his wife, Christina, and their two children, Lucie, 17, and George, 15. He shared with Us Weekly that Lucie helps him stay informed about current pop culture trends, including popular shows, which provides him with valuable insights as a broadcaster and interviewer.

Swift’s earlier television appearances, such as a past interview at age 15 discussing her music and performing “Teardrops on My Guitar,” illustrate how her media strategy has evolved alongside her career.

Swift has carefully chosen her recent interview opportunities, opting for platforms like Jimmy Fallon’s “The Tonight Show” and “The Graham Norton Show” for occasional appearances to promote her new projects. During these media engagements, she has shared insights into her creative process, collaborations, and album concepts.

Although securing an interview with Swift presents challenges, Geist remains hopeful. He told Parade that he values persistence, suggesting that the correct timing may eventually lead to a conversation with the artist who has reshaped the contemporary music industry.
