Beloved News Broadcaster Dies at 69

The broadcasting community in British Columbia is mourning the death of Dianne June Newman, a well-known local radio voice for over 20 years. She passed away on April 1, 2025, at Vancouver General Hospital in British Columbia, Canada, at the age of 69.

Newman was recognized for her calm demeanor and clear delivery, making her a familiar presence to listeners across the province. According to her family, she passed away with “peace, dignity, and grace” following a terminal diagnosis. Her decision was to pass away peacefully, as noted in her obituary.

Newman spent nearly two decades at CKWX in Vancouver, British Columbia, including 15 years as a prominent voice on the morning and midday broadcasts of 1130 NewsRadio, previously known as News1130. She joined the station in 1996, contributing to the launch of its all-news format, which became essential for commuters and news enthusiasts in British Columbia.

“She was a shining light and a mentor,” said a former colleague. “Serious, talented, and loved what she did.”

Newman’s career in broadcasting started at Mountain FM, covering the Squamish and Whistler regions north of Vancouver. She later moved to 1040 KICKS in Vancouver, British Columbia, where she honed the straightforward and informative style for which she became known.

Colleagues at News1130 remembered Newman as a professional who thoroughly prepared her newscasts, bringing intellectual rigor and a commitment to unbiased reporting. Her work ethic earned her respect from both colleagues and listeners during her 19.5-year tenure with Rogers Broadcasting.

After departing from News1130 in 2011, Newman utilized her voice talents as a narrator for Descriptive Video Works, offering detailed audio descriptions of films and television shows for the visually impaired. Colleagues noted her clear articulation and ability to enhance visual content without overshadowing it.

Born in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Newman maintained ties throughout the province while building her career. She lived and worked in several Canadian cities, such as Toronto, Ontario, and Squamish, British Columbia, before settling in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighborhood with her partner, Brad Copeland.

Outside of broadcasting, Newman pursued her passion for music, performing with the group Groove Therapy. The band regularly entertained at senior centers, veterans’ homes, and the Point Grey Legion 142 in Kitsilano, British Columbia, bringing enjoyment to many in Vancouver. Her musical endeavors with her partner Jessie were an important part of her life.

Newman was also known for her hospitality, often welcoming friends and family into her home with the aroma of freshly baked bread and hearty meals. Her partner, Brad, mentioned that she enjoyed sharing her culinary skills as much as her news reporting.

Her curiosity extended beyond her professional life. Newman was an avid traveler who explored Canada with Copeland and visited destinations in Australia, Asia, and Mexico. Her obituary noted her travel enthusiasm matched her attention to detail in broadcasting.

The couple shared over 30 years together, characterized by what family members recalled as love, laughter, and dancing in the kitchen. Newman and Copeland built a life centered on community, creativity, and connection.

Newman’s contribution to Canadian broadcasting is notable beyond her on-air work. In 1987, she was recognized by the BC Drama Association for her performance as “Pearl” in the play “Patio” by Jack Heifner, showcasing her dramatic talents.

She is survived by her partner Brad Copeland, five siblings, and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss her presence.

A celebration of Newman’s life is scheduled for June 1 at 1 p.m. in Vancouver’s West Point Grey neighborhood. This venue holds significance as a place where Newman frequently performed with her band.
