Harris STRIKES BACK Against Vance

In an unusual break from tradition, outgoing Vice President Kamala Harris chose not to host incoming Vice President JD Vance for a customary tour of the Naval Observatory residence before his inauguration. This long-standing courtesy extended between incoming and outgoing vice presidents has been ignored in this transition.

This departure from protocol occurred amid escalating political tensions. Kamala Harris is the first vice president in recent history to skip the pre-inaugural visit to the 33-room Victorian home. This residence has accommodated vice presidents and their families since the 1970s and is situated on the grounds of the US Naval Observatory, a few miles from the White House.

The decision followed a contentious election campaign, during which Vance launched personal attacks on Harris. This included referring to Harris as “trash” during a November rally. “They haven’t spoken since the election,” confirmed a Vance adviser to CNN.

Vance’s rhetoric against Harris escalated during the presidential campaign. He made comments ranging from policy criticism to personal attacks. At a rally in Atlanta, Georgia, Vance specifically nnounced to crowds “in two days, we are gonna take out the trash in Washington, D.C. And the trash’s name is Kamala Harris.”

Previously, he had called Harris “a crazy person” during an event in Raeford, North Carolina, according to statements at the time.

Further controversy was caused in September when Vance suggested that, unlike Donald Trump, no one had tried to assassinate Harris. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre criticized these comments as “dangerous,” cautioning that such language could incite violence against public officials.

Controversy also arose when Vance’s past comments surfaced where he berated Harris for not having biological children, categorizing her with other politicians as “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives.” Harris directly responded to these personal attacks stating, “These comments are mean and mean-spirited,” during an interview where she highlighted her own “modern family” and emphasized that families exist in many forms.

Despite the lack of direct communication between Harris and Vance, their teams have remained in contact. Former Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff and incoming Second Lady Usha Vance conversed for about 45 minutes, though the specifics of their discussion remain undisclosed.

Usha Vance, through mediators, inquired about childproofing requirements for their three children, all under eight years old. After initial rejection by a Harris political appointee, these concerns were addressed in subsequent communications between the Vance team and Navy aides.

The Vance family had a call with the Navy facilities team that manages the Naval Observatory around Christmas time. They discussed details regarding “the layout of the residence, logistics and practicalities of the move in, and to help answer any questions the Vances had as it related to the residence,” according to a person familiar with Harris’ schedule.

In 2016, then-Vice President Joe Biden hosted Vice President Mike Pence for about two hours, which included lunch and a tour of the residence. Similarly, in 2008, Vice President Dick Cheney welcomed Biden to the residence for nearly an hour.

Harris did not receive a tour before her 2021 inauguration, but Pence’s advisers claim that an invitation was discreetly extended to Harris and Emhoff in the final days of the Trump administration. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election results complicated the circumstances.

Sources close to Harris defended her decision not to host the tour, stating that she was focused on other priorities, including a recently canceled foreign trip and response to California wildfires.

Harris’ own move into the residence was delayed until April 2021 due to required repairs, including updates to the heating and air system, chimney liners, and wooden floors.
