6,000 Prisoners Escape Maximum Security Jail

On December 25, a substantial security breach took place in Maputo, Mozambique’s capital. The city’s police chief confirmed a mass prison escape occurred amidst nationwide unrest related to disputed election results. This escape from the maximum-security prison is intricately tied to the ongoing riots and civil disturbances across the country.

Approximately 6,000 prisoners escaped from Maputo Central Prison in what officials have called a rebellion fueled by external chaos. Police Chief Bernardino Rafael reported that during a standoff with security forces, 33 prisoners lost their lives and 15 others were injured.

Two concurrent events have occurred: a massive jailbreak and widespread civil unrest across Mozambique, including in its capital. The protests were triggered by the Constitutional Council’s contentious decision to affirm the ruling Frelimo party’s victory in the October 9 election. During these demonstrations, protesters targeted and damaged police-related facilities and public infrastructure.

Police Chief Rafael provided a detailed account of the events at Maputo Central Prison, located roughly nine miles southwest of the city. He explained that the disorder started around Wednesday noon when a group of “subversive protesters” congregated near the prison, causing a wall to crumble. In the resulting turmoil, it’s reported that prisoners managed to disarm correctional officers and started releasing their fellow inmates.

“A curious fact is that in that prison, we had 29 convicted terrorists, who they released,” Rafael said. “We are worried, as a country, as Mozambicans, as members of the defense and security forces.”

In a severe security breach, prisoners coordinated a mass escape, pouring out of the maximum-security facility, as depicted in viral social media videos. While some of the escapees sought refuge in nearby homes, military and correctional officers immediately initiated a response operation, capturing at least 150 escapees. Among the documented evidence was a video from one escapee, still partially restrained with a handcuff, who recounted being freed from the prison’s disciplinary unit by fellow inmates.

According to authorities, at least 21 individuals, including two police officers, have lost their lives in post-election violence. Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda stated the unrest was predominantly instigated by young supporters of opposition candidate Venancio Mondlane, who secured 24 percent of the vote compared to 65 percent for ruling Frelimo party candidate Daniel Chapo.

“The announcement of the election results sparked the recent violence and looting,” said Ronda during a press conference in Maputo. He noted that tensions had been escalating across the country prior to the Constitutional Council’s ruling, with protests starting immediately following the announcement.

Rafael has asked the escaped prisoners to voluntarily surrender and has called on the public to stay alert and report any information about the escapees.

The jailbreak and the ensuing violence underscore the unstable political and social situation in Mozambique. Rights groups and international observers have called for dialogue and transparency to address the root causes of the unrest. Meanwhile, residents express concern over their safety following the mass escape.

“We are scared for our safety,” a resident of Maputo commented, requesting anonymity. “The government needs to act quickly to capture these dangerous individuals.”

As the crisis persists, the Mozambican government is under growing pressure to restore order while also addressing the wider political tensions fueling the unrest.
