Veteran News Anchor Dead at 64

Mark Spain, a respected television news anchor for ABC affiliate WSET-TV in Lynchburg, Virginia, died on December 18, 2024, just three weeks after being diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He was 64.

Spain, who began chemotherapy on December 16, passed away two days later. His wife, Lynita Carter Spain, announced his death on social media, describing him as “a man of hope, someone who loves his city and stood for equality, treating others with respect and kindness.” She added that their 23-year marriage had been a wonderful journey filled with love, laughter, and many wonderful memories.

The veteran journalist’s career in news media began at age nine as a paperboy for the Cleveland Press. After majoring in Communications at Cleveland State University, Spain worked in several major markets, including Indianapolis, Cleveland, and Jacksonville, before joining WSET-TV in 2015, he served as lead anchor for the evening and late shows.

During his tenure at WSET, Spain earned multiple accolades, including being named Best News Anchor by the Association Press of the Virginias in 2018 and 2019. He won first place for Outstanding News Series in 2018 and Best Documentary or Public Affairs Program in 2022 from the Virginia Association of Broadcasters. His work was particularly noted for its focus on community issues and investigative depth.

Before his role at WSET, Spain spent 14 years at Jacksonville’s First Coast News. The station’s General Manager, Tim Thomas, said: “We are deeply saddened to hear of Mark’s passing. He always worked to better the First Coast in every story he produced.” During his time in Jacksonville, he was known for his mentoring young professionals and his dedication to covering stories that impacted local communities.

The Lynchburg community demonstrated their support for Spain following his cancer diagnosis by organizing a “Purple Out” day. Liberty University, located in Lynchburg, lit up its Freedom Tower in one of Spain’s favorite colors as a show of solidarity during his battle with the disease. The Danville Police Department also expressed condolences, noting Spain’s coverage of numerous department stories.

His impact on community initiatives was significant, including helping to raise $75,000 for the Jubilee Family Development Center in Lynchburg. Former colleague Kristen Mirand, now a reporter and anchor at Buffalo-based WKBW-TV, remembered Spain as “an incredible person who inspired everyone he met.” She noted his commitment to mentoring younger journalists and his dedication to accurate, compassionate reporting.

Spain’s colleagues at WSET paid tribute to him, highlighting his smile and positivity. It left a lasting impression on his family, the WSET team, and the thousands in Lynchburg and beyond who invited him into their homes each night through television. They also reflected on how, when he shared news of his cancer diagnosis with the community in early December, he maintained his characteristic optimistic outlook despite the challenging circumstances.

Spain is survived by his wife Lynita and their three children, including two daughters and a son. A GoFundMe has been established to support his family. The fundraising effort has raised over $27,000.
