Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, 84, has been admitted to a Luxembourg hospital following a fall during her visit to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. Pelosi was in Luxembourg as part of a congressional delegation from both parties, honoring the contributions of U.S. servicemembers during World War II.
Pelosi’s representative, Ian Krager, confirmed her hospitalization, stating, “Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi sustained an injury during an official engagement and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation. She is receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals.” Krager also assured that Pelosi was in good spirits and continuing her work despite the injury. It was later revealed on Saturday that Pelosi had undergone hip replacement surgery following a hip fracture caused by the fall.
The accident happened on Friday when Pelosi tripped and fell down marble stairs at the Grand Ducal Palace. Prior to the incident, she was seen walking with Representative Michael McCaul. Pelosi has subsequently canceled her remaining scheduled events in Luxembourg and Bastogne. Despite her absence, she expressed gratitude to the people of Luxembourg and Bastogne for their wartime contributions and ongoing efforts to uphold peace in Europe.
The visit served as an opportunity for Pelosi to honor the bravery of American soldiers during one of World War II’s most significant battles. Krager mentioned that Pelosi was deeply moved by the stories of courage and sacrifice shared during the ceremonies and remains committed to preserving their legacy.
This incident follows a similar one involving Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, 82, who suffered minor injuries after falling at the U.S. Capitol earlier in the week. This has initiated fresh discussions about the physical challenges faced by senior politicians.
As a long-standing representative from San Francisco, California, Pelosi surrendered her position as Speaker in 2023 when Republicans took control of the House. However, she kept her seat following a resounding victory in her district. Throughout her career, Pelosi has been instrumental in significant legislation, including the Affordable Care Act and various pandemic relief bills. She continues to be a significant figure in U.S. politics, recognized for her commitment and service.
Despite her recent injury, Pelosi is eager to return to the United States. Her office highlighted her commitment to a full recovery and the resumption of her duties.
