Neil Cavuto, a longtime Fox News anchor and business journalist, concluded his 28-year tenure with the network on Thursday, December 19, 2024, declining to renew his contract despite being offered an extension.
“I got to do what I love here — report the news, not shout the news, not blast the news,” Cavuto said during his final broadcast, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to “tell truth to power and fairness to all.”
Fox News lauded Cavuto’s departure in an official statement: “Neil Cavuto’s illustrious career has been a master class in journalism, and we’re extremely proud of his incredible 28-year run with FOX News Media. His programs have defined business news and set the standard for the entire industry.”
Cavuto, 66, joined Fox News in 1996 during the network’s launch, where he helped establish “Your World.” He later expanded his role by spearheading “Cavuto Live” in 2018 and hosting “Cavuto: Coast to Coast” on Fox Business Network.
Former Fox News anchor Geraldo Rivera praised Cavuto as a “truth teller” during the “Time of Trump,” highlighting his commitment to factual reporting. Cavuto distinguished himself from opinion hosts through his emphasis on separating fact from fiction, particularly in financial coverage.
His dedication to fact-based reporting occasionally led to notable on-air moments, including when he cut away from then-White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany during claims about illegal voting. This decision drew criticism from colleague Tucker Carlson, who characterized it as media censorship.
Cavuto faced significant health challenges throughout his career, confronting them while maintaining his rigorous work schedule. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1997, he underwent open-heart surgery in 2016. He later battled a severe case of COVID-19, which led him to become an outspoken advocate against vaccine denialism. Despite these health obstacles, Cavuto maintained his broadcasting schedule, earning respect from colleagues and viewers.
Cavuto’s departure comes amid broader changes in cable news networks, including budget adjustments affecting major personalities. This week, CNN saw the departure of senior staffer Gloria Borger after 17 years and anchor Alisyn Camerota after a decade with the network. Days earlier, the network cut ties with veteran journalist Chris Wallace, who reportedly earned $7 million annually.
Former President Donald Trump had frequently criticized Cavuto’s coverage. In September 2023, Trump posted on Truth Social,” Neil Cavuto, Fox’s Lowest Rated Anchor, is one of the WORST on Television. I actually prefer the losers at CNN and MSDNC,” after Cavuto’s analysis of Trump’s debate performance. Not to be outdone by his past criticisms, President-elect Trump predictably took to social media after the news of Cavuto’s exit, posting a celebratory tweet: “Should have happened a long time ago!”
The veteran anchor’s 4 p.m. Eastern time slot, which precedes Fox News’ popular program “The Five,” will be filled by rotating hosts until a permanent replacement is named. In the interim, “Coast to Coast” on Fox Business will become “Fox Business Live,” featuring rotating anchors until new programming debuts.
